Track and Field puts together a solid day at the Minnesota Open

Lindberg sets new PR in the mile; Canfall and Szutkowski take first in 60m

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The first meet of 2020 is complete, and the men's and women's track and field teams had an effective day at the Minnesota Open on January 11th. The men finished the day with 12 top-ten finishes and four top-five marks. The women compiled 19 top-ten finishes and six in the top-five.
 
Senior Benjamin Allen took first place in the men's 800m, almost breaking his own record with a time of 1:54.84. Brian Szutkowski was another athlete on the men's team close to breaking a school record. The senior was .23 seconds away from breaking CSP's record in the 60m dash. Szutkowski took first in the event with a time of 6.95 seconds.
 
On the women's side, junior Toni Canfall also took first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.61. Her time is just .01 seconds away from the school record she set last season in the event. Sofia Dodge set a personal record in the pole vault as the freshman cleared 3.35 meters to earn her first collegiate win this weekend. Out of a pool of ten women pole vaulters, the freshman tied for first place and also qualified for finals in the 60m and finished 6th (8.23).
 
Kara Lindberg made an impressive improvement in the mile, setting a new personal record with a time of 5:28.21 to place fifth. Freshman Isabella D'Burke performed well in her first meet as a Golden Bear, placing third in the 600m after running a time of 1:48.86.
 
Cory Warner earned point alongside Allen in the 800m with a time of 1:59.38 to finish 6th. In the field events, Andrew Johnson finished in the top-five with a leap of 6.25 meters in the long jump.
 
In the throws, Hannah Gustafson led the women in shot put with a toss of 41'1.5" and finished in sixth place. Tia Donlan was the top thrower in the weight throw, clearing 48'1.75" feet and placing eighth. For the men, Marcus Gustaveson finished in fourth place in the shot put and threw 52 feet. Keegan Larson (9th -45'9") and Hunter Quinn (10th- 43'11.25") were also among the top ten in the shot put. Larson also cleared 46'9.5" in the weight throw to finish in 13th.
 
The team will be back on the track next Friday, January 17th, for the Minnesota State Invitational hosted by Minnesota State Mankato. Field events will start at 2:00 p.m. and races will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Myers Field House.
