DULUTH, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up day two of competition at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Championships on Friday afternoon with the men in seventh place with 15 points and the women in fourth place with 22 points.
Sophomore
Mehlayna Straub turned in an All-NSIC performance in the women's heptathlon for the first time in her career, placing second in the 17-athlete field with a new personal record 4880 points to earn eight points for the Golden Bear women. Straub finished in sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.05 seconds and fourth in the shot put with a distance of 11.03 meters (36' 2.25"). A pair of second-place finishes in the high jump (1.65 meters, 5' 5") and 200-meter dash (25.01 seconds) vaulted her to the top spot at the end of day one. Her marks in the 100-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash, and shot put were all personal records. On day two, she placed fourth in the long jump, sixth in the javelin, and eighth in the 800-meter run to finish in second place, trailing the conference champion, Augustana's Kylee Sallee, by just 21 points. Straub's time of 2:32.37 in the 800-meter run set a new personal record.
Fellow sophomore
Cadence Tanner also earned All-NSIC honors, finishing third in the high jump with a new personal best height of 1.70 meters (5' 7"). Her finish secured six points for the Concordia women.
In the women's hammer throw, freshman
Bernie Barnhardt finished fourth with a toss of 47.19 meters (154' 10") to earn five points for CSP.
Junior
Nyadio Chan took more time off her school record in the preliminaries of the 800-meter run, posting a 2:13.27 clocking to finish second and punch her ticket to tomorrow's finals.
In the men's 10,000-meter run, Concordia sophomore
Andrew Alexander snagged four team points as he finished in fifth place with a time of 31:59.77. Senior
Will Sacay finished just behind him, claiming sixth place with a time of 32:18.61 to earn three points for the Bears.
The Golden Bears also had a pair of runners score in the 3000-meter steeplechase with senior
Matt Krummel placing fourth with a time of 9:31.34 to earn five team points while junior
Ethan Blischke finished eighth with a time of 9:48.69 to grab one additional point for CSP.
The men's decathlon wrapped up on Saturday with CSP sophomore
Will Hugo earning two team points by taking seventh place with 5667 total points.
In the preliminary round of the 1500-meter run, CSP's
Emmett Faltesek placed third with a time of 3:56.95. Faltesek will advance to the 1500-meter finals scheduled for Saturday at 1:40 p.m.
Freshman
Del Johnson also qualified for finals in the 400-meter dash after clocking a time of 48.33 seconds to place eighth in the preliminaries.
Senior
Calder Erick broke the school record in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 54.13 seconds to finish fifth and earn a spot in tomorrow's finals. His time beat
Drake Daniels' previous school record of 54.61 seconds set last season.
The NSIC Championships will wrap up on Saturday with field events scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. while track events will start at 1:05 p.m.
