Golden Bears have 11 top-five finishes against Division I athletes

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.- The Concordia-St. Paul track and field team competed in the Phil Lundin Snowshoe Open hosted by the University of Minnesota on Friday. The Golden Bears had one NCAA DII provisional mark, 11 top-five finishes, and 27 top-ten finishes while competing against Division I athletes. 

On the men's side, Cullen Feist and CJ Picazo were Concordia's top finishers, taking second place in their respective events. 

Feist was only 0.96 seconds behind the runner from Minnesota Duluth who took first place in the 600m with a time of 1:25.44. He did, however, improve upon his collegiate best time in the event by 0.81 seconds, earning him a new personal record of 1:26.40. 

Picazo placed second in the shot put with a mark of 48'2.5". He was only 1.5" behind the first place athlete who competed in the event unattached. Competing alongside Picazo in the shot put was teammate Hunter Quinn who took third in the event with a throw of 46'0.75". 

Thomas Dietel took third place in the 200m dash, falling behind two Division I athletes, one from St. Thomas and the other running unattached from Minnesota. With his time of 22.54, he was 0.46 seconds away from second and 0.50 seconds away from first. 

Matthew Helser took fourth in the men's 800m run. With a time of 1:58.63, he was 0.66 out of a top-three finish. 

Eben Mundfrom competed in the weight throw and made a toss of 63'2.25". Although taking fifth in the event, he earned an NCAA DII provo mark in the process. He ranks 17th among all DII athletes in the weight throw, per TFRRS.org. 

Alongside Feist, Payton Peterson competed in the 600m run and earned a fifth place finish with a time of 1:29.60, a new collegiate best for the freshman. 

Keegan Larson competed in the shot put with teammates Picazo and Quinn, taking fifth place with a throw of 44'2.75". 

Lauryn Samuel was the top finisher on the women's side after she took third place in the 200m dash, following Division I athletes from Minnesota and St. Thomas, respectively. With a time of 26.48, Samuel was .45 seconds from second place and 1.58 seconds from first place. 

Sydney Jackson took fourth place in the 600m run with a time of 1:38.86. Though she trailed runners from Minnesota and Minnesota Duluth, she earned a new collegiate best time, narrowly busting her previous best by .10 seconds. 

Breonna Graham took fifth in the 60m dash with a time of 8.30. She was .04 seconds from matching her collegiate best time. 

Sofia Dodge tied for fifth place in the women's pole vault with a vault of 11'3". She placed fifth with four other athletes, two of whom were from Division I programs. 

The Snowshoe Open was the last event before the team heads to Mankato, Minn. to compete in the NSIC Championships on Friday and Saturday the weekend of Feb. 25.
