13 top-10 finishes for the Golden Bears highlight the ESU Relays

EMPORIA, Kan. – The Concordia-St. Paul track and field teams opened the outdoor season with eight top-five finishes and 13 top-10 finishes at the ESU Relays on the campus of Emporia State on Friday and Saturday. The women took home 13th place while the men finished 16th.
 
Five of those top-five finishes and nine of 13 top-10 finishes came on the women's side in the season-opening meet.
 
The Golden Bear throwers were especially impressive as Tia Donlan took third in the discus with a distance of 149'1" and fifth in the hammer throw with a distance of 155'4". Donlan was edged by teammate Ella Paaverud in the hammer throw as Paaverud took fourth with a distance of 157'3". Paaverud also chipped in a 30th place finish in the javelin throw.
 
On the track, Avery Sivonen, Christabelle Mulcahy and Cece Lewis each delivered top-10 efforts on the weekend. Sivonen wrapped up an eighth place finish in the 3000m steeplechase as she finished in 12:51.15 whole Mulcahy took ninth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.61. Cece Lewis chipped in a 10th place effort in the 400m with a time of 59.33 to go along with a 34th place effort in the 200m.
 
Mulcahy joined forces with Lauryn Samuel, Jaid Perry and Isabella D'Burke in the sprint medley relay to take third. CSP had a pair of 4x800m relay teams compete with Perry, Gianna Bedford, Destiny Mattingly and D'Burke taking fifth while Kelsey Thelen, Tess Houglum, Delaney Butler and Sivonen took seventh.
 
On the men's side, the group collected three top-five finishes and four in the top-10.
 
Andrew Johnson's distance of 22'11.00" in the long jump was good for eighth, the top individual finish on the men's side while Eben Mundfrom fell just outside the top-10 with an 11th place finish and a distance of 169'3" in the hammer throw. Mundfrom added a 14th place finish in the discus, clearing 138'8".
 
The distance medley team of Thomas Schauerman, Taaron Rudzitis, Emmett Faltesek and Matthew Helser trailed only Northwest Missouri State as they took second with a time of 10:37.76. It was one of three relays for Schauerman as he joined Nate Segura, Priestly Jibunor and DJ Smith in a fourth place finish in the sprint medley as well as Travis Andrews, Cullen Feist and Helser in taking fifth in the 4x800m relay.
 
Concordia is back in action next Saturday at the Hamline Invitational.
