MANKATO, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul women's track and field team sits in first place in the NSIC Championships standings after collecting a league-best 17 points on Sunday in the NSIC Multi-Event Championships, capped by
Wakpor Ighovojah's program record-breaking performance.
The team's trio of competing athletes all finished inside the top six to finish as the only team that had more than a pair of players score points on the day. The team's 17 points puts them a full seven points ahead of any other team to give them a solid lead heading into the NSIC Championships in two weeks.
Highlighting the trio of point scorers for the team,
Wakpor Ighovojah broke her own record set in last season's NSIC Multi-Event Championships with 3584 points to take home second place and earn the team eight points in the event. Ighovojah put up a balanced effort in which she finished inside the top six in all five events, including winning the shot put with a distance of 36'00" and taking second in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.94 seconds. In addition, she tied for fifth in the high jump by clearing 5'2.25" as well as picking up sixth in long jump with a distance of 17'6.75" and sixth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:29.46. While none of her individual events represented PRs, nearly all of her results came close to her personal best.
Kalle Burney followed close behind Ighovojah as she added six more points for the team with a third place finish on the day. Burney shattered her personal best in the competition as her 3567 points surpassed her previous mark of 3481 points. Her top performance came in the high jump as she won the event with 5'4.5" while she also took third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:24.24. She also added a PR in the 60 meter hurdles to finish fifth in the even while also finishing seventh in the shot put and ninth in the long jump.
Erica Young rounded out the scoring as she took sixth to add three points and bring the total to 17. Young capped the day with a second place result in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:23.68 while also adding a top five finishes in the shot put and long jump. Her time in the 800m was easily her career-best and both her high jump and long jump finishes were PRs as well as she put up her best performance in three different events.
In addition to the pentathlon,
Tyler Naumowicz also got things going in the heptathlon today as he competed in the 60m, long jump, shot put and high jump. He currently sits in 11
th place after collecting 650 points (7.70 seconds) in the 60 meter dash, 610 points (20'0.5") in the long jump, 527 points (33'0.5") in the shot put and 696 points in the high jump (6'2") on the day.
Naumowicz will wrap up the competition tomorrow by competing in the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1000m run.
