Golden Bears begin spring season at SMSU Invite on Monday

CSP women’s golf tees off Monday morning at the Wigwam Golf Club.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Concordia-St. Paul women's golf team gets the spring portion of their schedule underway at the SMSU Spring Invitational on Monday, March 9. The two-round tournament is set to take place at the Wigwam Resort Red Course in Litchfield Park, Arizona. 

Tournament and Course Information
13 teams are slated to compete at the SMSU Spring Invitational, five of which are NSIC squads. The field is comprised of Southwest Minnesota State, Minnesota Crookston, Bemidji State, CSP, Minot State, Adams State, MSU Denver, Western New Mexico, Fort Lewis College, Colorado Mesa, Chadron State College, Mesa Community College and Lethbridge. 

Built in 1972 the Red Course is a traditional layout, lined with pine and eucalyptus trees, it is a 6,291 yard, par 72 course. The course features four par threes, 10 par fours and four par fives with water obstacles on 11 of the 18 holes. 

Last Season 
The Golden Bears finished seventh as a team at last season's spring invite, carding a collective 647 (+71) across two rounds. CSP shot a 329 (+41) in the opening round, before shooting a 318 (+30) in round two. 

Rebecca DeLong led the way last season, finishing in 29th place individually with a score of 159 (+15). The sophomore carded a 81 (+9) in the opening round before capping off the tournament by shooting a then single round low of 78 (+6). 

Darby Barstad shot an identical 78 (+6) in the second round, to card a 161 (+17) for the tournament, finishing tied for 34th. Ella Matzke and Piper Hill finished in a tie for 45th with scores of 165 (+21). Marina Allen carded a 167 (+23) to finish in 52nd place. 

Grand Valley State claimed the top spot in the team competition last season, carding a collective 577 (+1) finishing 21 strokes ahead of second place Academy of Arts (Calif.) at 598 (+22). 

Last Time Out 
The Golden Bears concluded the fall portion of their schedule by finishing sixth at the USF Invitational back in October. CSP shot a collective 655 (+30) at the tournament, finishing five strokes behind fifth place Minnesota State. 

Piper Hill finished atop the individual leaderboard, carding a 148 (+6) to finish three strokes ahead of Minnesota Crookston's Emma Pierson and claim the tournament crown. Hill tallied a new single round career low on day one, carding a 72 (E) behind a tournament leading five birdie round, following it up with a 78 (+6) in round two to claim the title. 

Ella Matzke shot a 167 (+23) for the tournament, carding an 81 (+9) in round one and 86 (+14) in round two to finish in 24th place. Addi Wood carded a 168 (+24) for the tournament, shooting a 82 (+10) in round one and 86 (+14) in round two to finish in 27th place. 

Rebecca DeLong shot a 172 (+28), shooting an 85 (+13) in round one and an 87 (+15) in round two to finish in 38th place. Darby Barstad rounded out the CSP five with a two round score of 172 (+28), shooting a 83 (+11) in round one and 89 (+17) in round two to finish tied for 38th. 

Fall Recap 
CSP began the fall season with a first place finish at the Tracy Lane Memorial Invite, their highest finish of the season. The Golden Bears then went on to finish fifth at the CSP Fall Brawl, fourth at the Jewel Invitational, 15th at the Grace Shin Invite and sixth at the USF Invite. 

Addi Wood notched three top 10 finishes, starting her collegiate career with an individual win at the Tracy Lane Invite. The freshman finished the fall season with a 76.20 stroke average, good for second in the NSIC. 

Piper Hill claimed the top spot at the USF Invite to close out the fall, finishing with a 80.00 stroke average. 

Rebecca DeLong recorded a new two round career low, carding a 155 (+13) to finish in 18th place at the Jewel Invitational. The junior finished the fall with a 83.10 stroke average. 

Darby Barstad's low score came at the Jewel Invitational where she carded a 163 (+21) to finish in 35th place, finishing with a stroke average of 84.20 for the fall.
