Golden Bears open spring season at Maverick Desert Classic

CSP men’s golf tees off Monday morning at the Palm Valley Golf Club.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Concordia-St. Paul men's golf team gets its spring season underway at the Maverick Desert Classic in Goodyear, Arizona on Monday morning. The Golden Bears are set to compete in the two-round tournament at the Palm Valley Golf Club.

Tournament and Course Information 
11 teams are slated to compete at the Maverick Desert Classic, five of which are NSIC squads. The field is comprised of Minnesota State, CSP, Augustana, Bemidji State, Minot State, Pittsburg State, Concordia (Neb.), Washburn, Rockhurst, Benedictine and Lethbridge. 

Palm Valley Golf Club is a 27 hole course in the Phoenix, Arizona area. The layout allows players to play three different 18 hole combinations on the course. The North and South courses were designed by course architect Arthur Hills, while the newest of the three, the West Course was designed by Mike Angus. 

Last Season 
The Golden Bears claimed the team title at last year's Maverick Desert Classic, carding a collective 583 (+7) jumping two spots on the final day to finish one stroke ahead of second place Rockhurst. 

Senior Tommy Marker finished in second place, carding a 142 (-2) for the tournament. Trey Timm finished tied for 11th after carding a 145 (+1), shooting a 72 (E) in round one and a 73 (+1) on day two. 

Josh Esterley tied for 16th, carding a 146 (+2), shooting a 71 (-1) in round one and 75 (+3) in round two. Chase Camilli and Camden O'Malley finished in a two for 70th, carding an identical 159 (+15). Sam Rudolph placed 77th shooting a 165 (+21). 

The win marked the second time the Golden Bears took the top spot at the Maverick Desert Classic with the first coming in 2023.

Last Time Out 
The Golden Bears capped off the fall season by finishing fifth at the USF Invite back in October. CSP carded a collective 611 (+5) to finish six strokes behind fourth place Sioux Falls. 

Sean Leutner was CSP's top individual finisher, carding a 155 (+11) to place 32nd. Leutner opened the tournament by shooting a 77 (+5), carding a 78 (+6) in the final round to move up 13 spots in the final standings. 

Trey Timm tallied his fourth sub-70 round of the season, carding a 68 (-4) in the opening round, before shooting 81 (+9) in round two to finish with a 145 (+5) in 11th place. Josh Esterly birdied three times in round two to card a 154 (+10) for the tournament and finish in 28th place.

Chase Camilli carded a 154 (+10) as well to finish tied with Esterley for 28th place. Camden O'Malley rounded out the CSP five, carding a 159 (+15) to finish in 46th place. 

Fall Recap 
CSP finished second at both the BSU Invite and CSP Fall Brawl to start the fall season, before finishing sixth at the Jewel Invitational and the Skip Wagnon Invite, closing out the fall with a fifth place finish at the USF Invite. 

Trey Timm carded a 66 (-5) in the final round at the CSP Fall Brawl, setting a new single round career low and finishing in fifth place. Timm matched his single round career low with another 66 (-5) at the Skip Wagnon Invite, notching three sub-70 rounds during the fall season and finishing with a 72.18 stroke average, good for ninth in the NSIC. 

Josh Esterley managed a sixth place finish at the BSU Invite, carding a 142 (E) before turning in an identical score at the CSP Fall Brawl to finish in ninth. Esterly's single round low of 65 (-5) tying a career and program single round low.

Sean Leutner carded a 141 (-1) in his collegiate debut to finish fifth at the BSU Invite, the freshman finished the fall season with a 72.60 stroke average good for 11th in the NSIC.
