HUDSON, Wis. - The Golden Bear women's golf finished in sixth place after hosting the CSP/MSU Fall Brawl on Monday and Tuesday. Concordia shot 660 (+92) as a team.
CSP entered the day tied for seventh place and junior Piper Hill started the second round tied for 36th. Both the Golden Bears and Hill improved after the junior shot 76 (+5) in round two.
"There are some things to build on," said head coach Peter Maki. "The team definitely had a little better day two. We're still getting some more reps and getting some more experience in. We'll keep working and get a lot better through the course of the season."
Hill finished with a total score of 161 (+19). After not hitting and birdies in round one, Hill hit four birdies in round two. She also finished the tournament with 14 total pars. This marked the junior's fifth-straight top-15 finish.
"She just started to hit the golf ball like she normally hits it," Maki said. "Piper's a really talented ball striker, and it hasn't really been there this past week. She found herself again today and just believed in herself."
Rebecca DeLong tied for 21st shooting 166 (+24) after rounds of 79 (+8) and 87 (+16). She finished the tournament with 14 pars and two birdies.
DeLong's second-round score didn't contribute to the team totals as Darby Barstad and Jenna Schumacher each shot 82 (+11) while Ella Matzke shot 86 (+15) in round two. Barstad improved by eight places on Tuesday and tied for 30th shooting 168 (+26).
Schumacher improved by eight places tying for 33rd shooting 169 (+27). Schumacher and Barstad each led CSP in pars with eight each. Matzke finished tied for 37th shooting 170 (+28). Freshman Marina Allen competed as an individual placing 53rd at 182 (+40).
Sioux Falls won the tournament shooting 634 (+66) ahead of Winona State at 640 (+72) and Wayne State at 643 (+75). Ellie Behring of Winona State won the tournament shooting 149 (+7) which was three strokes ahead of Sioux Falls' Maggie Veenendall in second place.
The Golden Bears are back in action next week at Winona State's Watkins Invitational. The tournament will take place on Sept. 23-24 at The Jewel Golf Club in Lake City.
