Bears take four first-place finishes at Gary Wilson Open

Mundfrom breaks another program record and earns provisional mark

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.- The Concordia-St. Paul track and field team competed in the Gary Wilson Open, hosted by the University of Minnesota. The Golden Bears had four first-place finishes, the only NCAA Division II provisional mark earned at the meet, and a new program record.  

The only NCAA D-II provisional mark of the day went to CSP's Eben Mundfrom in the weight throw. Mundfrom took third in the event with a 61'3.5" mark, his new college best and a new Concordia program record. The previous record of 60'7.25" was set by Mundfrom at the Chuck Petersen Open in December 2021. 

Also competing in the men's weight throw was Hunter Quinn who earned a 48'2.75" mark, taking fourth place and Keegan Larson who earned a 42'6.75" mark, taking fifth place. 

In the 60m dash, Andrew Johnson earned Concordia's best placement at second with a time of 7.02 while Hudson Jean trailed close behind at 7.07 to take third place. 

Payton Peterson debuted in the 400m and earned fifth place with a time of 56.17 and was CSP's only representative in the event. 

Thomas Schauerman and Cullen Feist competed in the 800m, taking first and second place. The pair took times of 2:00.30 and 2:05.86, respectively. 

Golden Bears Matthew Helser, Emmett Faltesek, and Matthew Krummel all debuted in the mile run with Helser placing in the top five with a time of 4:29.99. Faltesek ran a 4:38.62 pace for sixth and Krummel paced at 4:39.78 for eighth. Senior runner Schauerman earned his collegiate best time of 4:26.32 in the event to take second place. 

Owen Erickson, Matthew Helser, Matthew Thomforde, and Matthew Krummel took first, second, third and fourth place in the 3,000m event, respectively. In order, the four ran times of 9:10.96, 9:30.42, 9:31.72, and 9:35.77. Junior runner Thomforde earned his collegiate best time in the event while Erickson, Helser, and Krummel all debuted. 

Concordia placed fourth and fifth in the 60 hurdles with efforts by Calder Erick and Hudson Jean. With a time of 8.83 to take fourth, Erick nearly beat his own college best of 8.74. Jean debuted in yet another event at the meet and took a time of 8.84 to place behind Erick. 

The foursome of Enders, Schauerman, Faltesek, Feist took second place behind the squad from St. Thomas, taking a time of 3:38.44. 

Jakob Tordsen, Arik Johnson, and Basheer Alam competed in the pole vault. With his mark of 13'5.75", Tordsen took third in the event and earned his college best mark. Johnson took fourth in the event with a 12'6" mark while Alam debuted with an 11'0.25" mark and sixth place. 

Brothers Andrew and Arik Johnson competed in the long jump, taking first and eighth place, respectively. Andrew earned a mark of 22'11.25" and twin Arik marked at 20'6.25". 

In the shot put, junior Keegan Larson took first place with a mark of 46'10". Hunter Quinn took third with a 43'1.75" mark while Peyton Enders took home a personal best and fourth place with a 26'4.5" mark. 

For the women, Christabelle Mulcahy competed in three events. She took third in the 60m dash with a time of 8.32, she took fifth in the 200m with a time of 27.70, and she took fifth in the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.25. 

Ella Paaverud competed in two events at the meet, placing fourth in the high jump with a 5'1" mark and sixth in the weight throw with a 45'9" mark. 

Jenna Morris also competed in two events for the Golden Bears, debuting in both of them. She placed eighth in the shot put with a throw of 30'2.25" and took 11th in the weight throw with a toss of 35'11.5". 

Tia Donlan and Sarah Jeppesen joined teammates Paaverud and Morris in the weight throw. Donlan threw 50'1.75" and placed fifth while Jeppesen threw 40'11" and took seventh. 

Next, the Golden Bears will compete in the St. Thomas Open which will be held in St. Paul on Friday, Jan. 14.
