Ryan Williams has announced that 42 athletes have committed to Golden Bear football for the 2013 season. The 42 athletes come from seven different states, with 19 offensive, 25 defensive players and two special teams players. All announced recruits to join the Golden Bear football team are contingent upon admission to Concordia University and compliance with NCAA rules and certification by the NCAA eligibility center.
"With the extreme numbers, you can tell we had to address needs in all areas of our football team and in doing so have also added competitive depth to our roster. The strength of our class is in our speed and athleticism. With more linebacker and secondary needs because of our defensive system change, we focused on getting good linebackers. That will help us in our 3-4 defense, but it also bolsters our special teams units," said Coach Williams.
The seven states are most represented by Minnesota (13), Wisconsin (13) and Illinois (11).
On the offensive side of the ball, the class features six wide receivers, five offensive linemen, three quarterbacks and two tight ends. "All three of the quarterbacks that are coming in are athletic and can throw. We like their versatility. Up front, the offensive linemen are exciting. They are physical, athletic and quality offensive linemen. At the tight end, we add a mid-year transfer that's already here and a true freshman. We're excited about both. They are athletic and physical and fit our needs in how we run the offense at the position. Our wide receivers add depth and talent and solidify the position for years to come. They all posses good receiving and playmaking ability."
Defensively, the Golden Bears add 12 linebackers, 10 defensive backs and four defensive linemen. "The strength of our defensive class is in our linebacking core. We signed many on the inside and outside that are physical, fast and athletic. Some of these young linebackers will have an opportunity to play and compete early in their careers, as well as provide talent into the future. In the secondary we addressed our needs at the corner and safety spots. The quality and quantity will help us immediately and into the future as well. Although we did sign four defensive linemen, we are still looking to address some needs at the position."
"In summary, I'm excited that our program added young men that are not only talented in football but also have a true character and desire to be a Concordia University Golden Bear. We are just as excited to have them in our program."
Since moving to NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun (NSIC) in 1999, the Golden Bears have captured two league championships and appeared in three Mineral Water Bowls.
