Cam Mata is set to compete in the long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend in Virginia Beach, Va.
The NCAA Indoor Championships are scheduled for Friday, March 13, and Saturday, March 14, in Virginia Beach, Va. at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex. The men's long jump is scheduled to begin at 4:10 pm (CT) on Friday, where Mata will compete in the first of two flights. There is no preliminary round for the long jump. Student-athletes qualified for the championships by reaching a provisional standard established for each event. For each individual event contested, the top 18 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition, the top 12 declared relay teams, one per institution, were accepted, and for the heptathlon and pentathlon the top 16 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition.
It marks Mata's first appearance at the national meet. At the NSIC Indoor Championships, Mata placed fourth with a distance of 23' 10.75". Earlier this season at the Mark Schuck Open, Mata broke the Concordia indoor long jump record with a distance of 24' 2.25". With that distance, Mata ranks 16
th among the 18 competitors selected to the field.
Mata is just the third Golden Bear to earn a spot in the long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships, following Diahn Zeon (2008-09) and Christian Davis (2020-21). Davis went on to earn USTFCCCA All-America honors with a sixth-place finish.
At the NCAA Indoor Championships, the top eight finishers earn USTFCCCA All-America First Team honors while the 9-12 finishers are named All-America Second Team selections.
