CSP football announces 2023 recruiting class

Golden Bears also welcome assistant coach Woody Corey to the program

2.1.23

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Concordia-St. Paul head football coach Shannon Currier has announced the addition of 17 additions to the football program for the 2023-24 academic year. Of the 17 newcomers, six have already enrolled for the spring term, and the team has announced the hiring of assistant coach Woody Corey.

"With 17 returning starters and 112 players on the current roster, our goal was to add players who can play immediately," said Coach Currier. "We have six players enrolled for the spring term and will be us during spring season and the freshmen we targeted are players we felt could help us immediately, primarily at the corner and wide receiver positions. We were also able to obtain quality defensive linemen that we hope will play for our program in the near future."

Woody Corey joins the Golden Bears as a wide receivers coach and will work closely with Coach Currier on the offense, self-scouting and working with the offensive perimeter.

"We went through an extensive search to fill a key role on our staff, interviewing eight different candidates at the AFCA convention. We came away really impressed with Woody's knowledge, character, and background which made him an obvious choice to join our staff."

He continued, "He's a coach's son and we learned through the process that he did a fantastic job at Carroll. Our players enjoyed their time with him when he visited during his campus interview, and he'll be a great fit with our institution."

Corey joins Concordia from Carroll University (Wis.) where he was a graduate assistant coach working with the wide receivers while pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA). In addition to his football coaching duties, he was a co-strength & conditioning coach and was the assistant equipment and film coordinator for the program.

He completed his undergraduate degree from North Park University (Ill.) in secondary education and history while competing as a wide receiver for the football program.

The football recruiting class spans 10 states and both coasts, from California to Georgia and includes three Division I transfers and a pair from the junior college ranks.

"We went for impact versus numbers, and part of the reason we were able to do that is that our retention was so high. Every freshman is returning for the spring semester, which is huge for our program. We think the skill players we added will have a chance to play immediately," Currier concluded.

Since moving to NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun (NSIC) in 1999, the Golden Bears have captured two NSIC Championships and appeared in three Mineral Water Bowl games.

Coach Currier rejoined the program in December 2015 and will enter his 12th overall season as CSP head football coach. He led the program to four consecutive winning seasons from 2000 to 2003 including the program's first NSIC championship and postseason appearance in the 2003 season and his fifth winning campaign in 2019. Currier is the program's all-time wins leader with 49 career wins at CSP. The 2003 NSIC Coach of the Year enters his 17th season as a head Division II football coach with 69 career wins including his five seasons at Truman State (Mo.). He has presided over seven winning NCAA Division II football seasons as a head coach.

Concordia-St. Paul is the only private, Division II institution in the state of Minnesota and the only Division II member in the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
