Concordia football adds 41 student-athletes for 2022-23

Golden Bears welcome 41 incoming freshmen on National Signing Day

2.2.22

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Concordia-St. Paul head football coach Shannon Currier and his staff have announced the addition of 41 incoming student-athletes for the 2022-23 academic year as part of National Signing Day.

All announced recruits to join the Golden Bear football team are contingent upon admission to Concordia University and compliance with NCAA rules and certification by the NCAA eligibility center.

"We are really excited about this recruiting class. It is thorough and touches all facets of our roster, from signing a long snapper on special teams, to skill positions on offense, adding to an already deep offensive line, and all three levels of the defense," said Coach Currier. He continued, "Our focal areas as we attacked this class were three position groups: quarterback, wide receivers and defensive line, and this class really delivers on all three fronts. We have added long, athletic kids on the edge on the defensive line, as well as standouts to really push our wide receiver competition."

Currier concluded, "But what really stands out to me with this recruiting class is the quality of young men we have recruited to Concordia University. I am looking forward to calculating the incoming average GPAs, because I'm expecting it to be the highest-ever for a freshman football class. We have a lot of leadership in this group, and guys who will enhance our culture."

The 41 newcomers come from nine different states led by 14 each from Minnesota and Wisconsin followed by Texas with five recruits.

Since moving to NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun (NSIC) in 1999, the Golden Bears have captured two NSIC Championships and appeared in three Mineral Water Bowl games.

Coach Currier rejoined the program in December 2015 and will enter his 11th overall season as CSP head football coach. He led the program to four consecutive winning seasons from 2000 to 2003 including the program's first NSIC championship and postseason appearance in the 2003 season and added another winning campaign in 2019. Currier is the program's all-time wins leader with 48 career wins at CSP. The 2003 NSIC Coach of the Year enters his 16th season as a head Division II football coach with 68 career wins including his five seasons at Truman State (Mo.). He has presided over seven winning NCAA Division II football seasons as a head coach.

Concordia-St. Paul is the only private, Division II institution in the state of Minnesota and the only Division II member in the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
