EMPORIA, Kan. – The Concordia-St. Paul men's and women's track and field teams began the outdoor season on Saturday, competing in the ESU Relays. The men finished fourth of seven teams while the women placed fifth of ten teams.
The Golden Bear men claimed three victories on the day, all on the track.
Brian Szutkowski won the 100m with time of 10.73, also earning another top-five finish in the 200m (5th, 22.35).
Benjamin Allen also topped his field of competitors, finishing the 800m in 1:55.92. Finally,
Cory Warner turned in a victory for the Golden Bears, claiming the top spot in the 1500m by crossing the finish line in 4:13.52.
Nasru Wado was once again breaking records for the Golden Bears, but this time did so in the Hammer throw. The senior reached a distance of 169'6", which was good for fourth place and five points for CSP. Wado broke his own record that he set last year by nearly six feet in the event.
Marcus Gustaveson also posted a top finish for the Golden Bears in the throwing events, as the junior finished second in the discus. Gustaveson finished with a final distance of 159'8", just under seven feet shy of his own school record in the event.
The men finished the meet with 13 top-five finishes and 18 top-ten marks. Other top five finishers included:
Andrew Leck (200m, 400m),
Parker Powers (High Jump),
Marshall Jeppeson (Pole Vault),
Jonathan Johnson (Long Jump),
Keegan Larson (Discus), and
Jakob Tordsen (Javelin).
It was the short distance events that made the biggest splash for the women's team, as both
Toni Canfall and
Christabelle Mulcahy turned in impressive performances for the Golden Bears. Canfall ran the 100m in 12.11 to finish 2nd, .013 off of her school record time set in 2018. Mulchay made her outdoor debut for the Golden Bears, making the biggest impact in the 100m hurdles. The Stillwater, Minnesota native also finished second, earning the spot with a time of 14.69 (.54 off of the school record).
Kara Lindberg claimed the lone win of the day for the women's team, as the sophomore distance runner captured first place in the 3000m Steeplechase. Lindberg finished the race in 11:38.42 to add 10 points to the Golden Bears' total.
Lydia Carr and
Tasha Bennett finished third and fourth in the event, respectively.
Hannah Gustafson had a big day for CSP, as the junior competed in three different throwing events. Gustafson claimed fifth in both the shot and the hammer throw, covering a distance of 39'11.25" in the former and 146'8" in the latter. Gustafson also finished sixth in the discus with a mark of 128'4".
The Golden Bear women finished with nine top-five finishes and 18 top-ten finishes at the first meet of the season. Next on the schedule for CSP will be Dutch Invitational hosted by Central College. That meet will take place in Pella, Iowa on April 5th and 6th.
