Volleyball rolls past #14 Northern State in Aberdeen

Lewis matches career high in kills for the second night in a row

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The #2 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (14-1, 7-0 NSIC) rolled to an impressive road sweep at #14 Northern State (13-2, 6-1 NSIC) on Saturday night. The Golden Bears controlled the match from start to finish as they took the three sets 25-17, 25-14 and 25-16.

The Golden Bears continued their best start in conference play since 2013 as they won their seventh in a row in league action to start the season. It was also their 17th win in a row in NSIC play dating back to Oct. 14 of last season in a five-set defeat to SMSU and 19th in a row in the NSIC on the road since a four-set loss at Northern State all the way back on Oct. 16, 2015. The win also bumps CSP to 32-8 in 40 all-time meetings with the Wolves as they moved to 11-5 in 16 trips to Aberdeen.

Heading into the night with one of the most efficient offenses in the NSIC with a team hitting percentage of .323, the Wolves were stifled by CSP's defense as they were limited to just a .105 hitting percentage on the night. The Golden Bears held NSU to 29 kills while forcing 18 hitting errors on 105 swings in the match. Impressively, Concordia did not allow a hitting percentage higher than .182 in any of the three sets in the win.

On the offensive side of things, Concordia collected 46 kills with 12 errors on 119 attempts to finish with a .286 hitting percentage. CSP also held a 5-1 edge in service aces, a 6.0-4.0 edge in total blocks and a 53-50 edge in digs on the night.

Brooklyn Lewis matched her career-best in kills for the second time in as many nights as she once again put up 19 kills in the win. Lewis was even more efficient with her swings as she compiled a match-best .405 hitting percentage to go along with three digs and a pair of blocks. For the weekend, the junior tallied a staggering 5.43 kills with a .361 hitting percentage.

With Lewis doing much of the heavy lifting, no other Golden Bears finished in double figures as Sydney Book and Hope Schiller each chipped in eight kills, Mariya Sampson added six and Shelby Seurer had five. Schiller filled the stat sheet elsewhere with 11 digs, two blocks and an ace while Seurer was dominant at the net with six blocks.

Elizabeth Mohr made it back-to-back double-doubles with 41 assists, 10 digs, two aces and two blocks in what was a big night. The double-double was her fifth of the year. In the back row, Tori Hanson paced the squad with 16 digs as she surpassed 15 digs for the eighth time this season.

After falling behind 3-2 right off the bat, Concordia quickly shifted the momentum in their favor with four straight points to take a 6-3 lead. The Golden Bears maintained a small lead until the midway point of the set until they strung together a big 7-1 run to turn a 13-12 advantage into a 20-13 edge. The lead remained six or above the rest of the set as they held their largest lead of the set at the final margin of 25-17.

Concordia picked up where they left off in the first by scoring the first nine points of the second set to put it out of reach early. Northern State fought their way back within three at 12-9, 13-10 and 15-12 before another extended CSP run ballooned the lead even further. The Golden Bears scored 10 of the final 12 points to close out the set 25-14 to build a big 2-0 lead in the match.

Another early run, this time a 3-0 burst to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead as they built the decisive edge in the first 10 points. The Wolves kept things close until the 15-13 mark when Concordia put up a 5-1 run to push their advantage to 20-14. CSP extended that run to be a 10-3 run overall as the Golden Bears cruised to the sweep with a 25-16 set win in the third.

CSP remains on the road next weekend as they wrap up their four-match road trip at St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth.
