ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The second-ranked Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (15-1, 8-0 NSIC) made 20 straight NSIC road wins with a sweep at St. Cloud State (11-7, 3-5 NSIC) on Friday night. The Golden Bears took the three sets 25-15, 25-10 and 25-19.
Concordia continued their dominance against the Huskies as they won their 25
th in a row against SCSU to move to 25-1 in the all-time series. In addition to extending their conference road winning streak as well as their winning streak against St. Cloud State, CSP made it 18 wins in a row overall in NSIC play with their last loss coming nearly one year ago dating back to Oct. 14, 2016.
The Golden Bear offense was nearly unstoppable on the night as they cleared the .400 mark hitting for the first time all season with a mark of .451. That percentage was the highest for CSP since the team hit .591 against Bemidji State back on Nov. 12 last season. The team committed just eight errors while grabbing 49 kills on 91 attempts.
The defense was also effective as they held the Huskies to just 26 kills and a .124 hitting percentage as they picked up 53 digs in the win. Concordia also held a 4.0-1.0 edge in the block department as well as a 7-2 advantage in service aces.
While
Brooklyn Lewis continued to be the most reliable source for kills with a match-best 15 to go along with a .345 hitting percentage, it was CSP's two middle blockers that stole the show.
Sydney Book surpassed double figures in kills for the second time in four career matches in navy and gold as she went 11-1-14 to finish with a near-perfect .714 hitting percentage.
Shelby Seurer followed close behind as she did not commit a single error while picking up eight kills on 12 attempts to finish with a .667 mark as well as two aces in the victory.
Hope Schiller also added eight kills while
Mariya Sampson added seven more with a .538 hitting percentage.
Elizabeth Mohr was once again the driving force of the offense as she evenly distributed her 45 assists while also chipping in eight digs and an ace. In the back it was Schiller that paced the squad as she added to her eight kills with 13 digs, two blocks and an ace while
Tori Hanson also finished in double figures with 11 digs.
No St. Cloud State players had more than six kills as Nicole Miller and Becca Gruber each had six and Abby Templin chipped in five more in the loss.
The Golden Bears took control from the first point as they grabbed four of the first five and seven of the first 10 to build a comfortable advantage in the first set. The lead sat at three or more the rest of the set as a big 10-3 run turned a 10-7 lead into a double-digit edge at 20-10. The two teams traded point from there as Concordia took the opener 25-15.
After CSP and SCSU split the first 10 points, the Golden Bears strung together a massive run to put the second set out of reach. Concordia rattled off a 14-2 run, concluded with eight straight points, to balloon the lead all the way out to 19-7. The Golden Bears maintained a lead of 11 or more throughout the latter stages of the set as they took a 2-0 lead with a 25-10 set win.
CSP picked up where they left off in the third by scoring five of the first six points as they led the set from start to finish. The Golden Bears kept the Huskies at arm's length as the lead remained at four at the 13-9 mark before another run gave Concordia breathing room. Concordia pushed their lead to seven with a 3-0 run before cruising down the stretch to finish off the sweep with a 25-19 set victory in the third set.
Concordia returns to action tomorrow afternoon with a massive meeting against #6 Minnesota Duluth at 2 p.m.
