Lewis leads the way with 19 kills in four-set win at MSU Moorhead

CSP moves to 6-0 in NSIC play

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The #2 Concordia Golden Bears volleyball team (13-1, 6-0 NSIC) made it six straight wins in NSIC play with a four-set win at MSU Moorhead (7-7, 2-4 NSIC) on Friday night. The Golden Bears claimed the victory by taking the first two sets 25-23, 25-20 before and the fourth set 25-19 after dropping the third set 25-22.

The win bumped CSP's record to 28-8 in 36 meetings with the Dragons with the Golden Bears winning the last 13 in a row and 28 of the past 29. Concordia also moves to 6-0 in conference action for the first time since 2013.

It was a career night for Brooklyn Lewis as she paced all players with a career-best 19 kills with an efficient .326 hitting percentage. Lewis committed just four errors on her 46 swings as she matched the most kills for a CSP hitter this season.

Mariya Sampson followed Lewis with 16 kills while Hope Schiller and Sydney Book also reached double figures with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Schiller also chipped in a team-best 19 digs and four blocks to pick up her fifth double-double while Book reached double figures in kills for the first time in her career.

Schiller was one of five Golden Bears to hit double digits in digs as Erin Fallert, Taylor Soine, Tori Hanson and Elizabeth Mohr also reached that mark. Fallert grabbed 15 while Soine had 12 and Hanson had 10. In addition, Mohr picked up 10 digs as well to go along with 58 assists for the double-double.

Sarah Petrbok paced the Dragons with 14 kills and snagged the double-double with 18 digs while Monica Vega led all players with 20 digs in the loss.

The Golden Bears trailed from nearly start to finish in the opening set before a crucial late surge gave CSP the decisive edge. MSUM took the first two points and five of the first seven to set the tone early. They eventually expanded their lead to five at 10-5 and seven at 14-7 before Concordia began the comeback. CSP grabbed five straight to cut the deficit to two, but MSUM quickly pushed it back to five with three straight for themselves. Concordia still trailed by two at 20-18 before an impressive 5-0 run gave them their first lead of the set at 23-20. The Dragons responded with a 3-0 run to tie it, but CSP responded with two more to take the set 25-23.

The second set followed a much different script as the Golden Bears did not trail throughout. MSU Moorhead tied it up twice in the early going, once at 2-2 and once at 7-7, before CSP took the lead for good. Concordia used an extended 9-4 run to turn a 10-9 lead into a 19-13 lead as they started to pull away. CSP's advantage did not shrink below four the rest of the set as they cruised to a 25-20 set win.

With Concordia a set away from clinching the sweep, the Dragons bounced back to keep the match alive. With the score tied at 4-4, MSUM scored five straight points to build a comfortable advantage. That matched the biggest lead of the set as MSU Moorhead held off the Golden Bears. CSP managed to keep it close, cutting the gap to two on several occasions, but the Dragons pulled out the 25-22 win in the set to push the match to a fourth set.

Concordia wasted little time setting the tone in the fourth set as they grabbed seven of 10 to quickly build a five point edge. MSUM managed to chip away with three of the next four points to cut it to two before the Golden Bears ballooned their lead from there. The advantage grew to as many as nine at 20-11 as Concordia cruised to a 25-19 set win to close out the match win.

The Golden Bears are set to play their seventh match against a ranked opponent tomorrow with a trip to #14 Northern State. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
