CSP looks to stay unbeaten in league play

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The #2 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (10-1, 3-0 NSIC) remains at home this weekend as they play host to Minot State (3-8, 0-3 NSIC) on Friday night and U-Mary (5-7, 1-2 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon in a pair of NSIC contests at Gangelhoff Center.

MINOT STATE SERIES HISTORY
Friday marks the seven meeting in the all-time series with Minot State as the Golden Bears have won the first six meetings. All six previous meetings have come since Minot State joined the NSIC with CSP claiming sweeps in five of the six. The Beavers claimed their only set win in the series in a match in Minot back on Oct. 25, 2013.

LAST MEETING VS MINOT
Back on Oct. 21, 2016, CSP cruised to a comfortable sweep at Minot State in the lone meeting of the season between the two schools.

It was an all-around effort as CSP hit .384 with 56 kills while Minot State hit just .046 with 27 kills. Concordia also held an edge of 45-31 in digs, 7-4 in service aces and 6.0-1.0 in total blocks as they controlled nearly every aspect of the match.

Filling in for Kasey Williams, Elizabeth Mohr had a career night as she shattered her previous career high with 35 assists to go along with eight digs while guiding the Golden Bear offense to the win. The two main beneficiaries were Mariya Sampson and Anna Schlaak as each collected 10 kills to lead the offense. Schlaak was especially efficient as she hit .474 with just one error while adding 10 digs for her fifth double-double in six matches. She also added a pair of aces.

U-MARY SERIES HISTORY
Against the Marauders, the Golden Bears have gone a perfect 16-0 heading into this weekend's match. Concordia has dominated the series as they have swept the last 13 meetings and 15 of 16 overall. The only meeting that didn't end in a sweep was a five-set win for CSP in Bismarck on Sept. 28, 2007.

LAST MEETING VS U-MARY
In last season's meeting on Oct. 22 in Bismarck, Concordia took care of business in a straight set victory to improve to 12-0 away from home on the season.

On the night, CSP held a nearly .300 point advantage in hitting percentage as they finished the match at .380 while holding the Marauders to .084. The Golden Bears also held advantages of 6-1 in service aces, 9.0-4.0 in total blocks and 39-27 in digs.

On a night in which the team finished with just 49 kills, five different players registered at least five kills. Anna Schlaak continued to lead the way as she finished with a team-high nine kills to go along with 10 digs as she fell a kill short of picking up another double-double. Mariya Sampson was right behind Schlaak as she picked up seven kills while Riley Hanson and Emma Lange each added six kills. Hanson hit an impressive .625 to go along with eight total blocks as well.

LAST TIME OUT
On Tuesday night on their home court, bounced back from a tough first set to defeat Minnesota State in four sets.

It was a grind for Concordia as they managed to claim the victory despite being out-hit (.187-.182), out-dug (60-57) and out-blocked (10.0-6.0) in the match. CSP did, however, edge the Mavericks in service aces (10-8) while committing less service errors (8-9) in the win. They also finished with 11 more kills than MSU with a margin of 53-42.

For the sixth match in a row and the seventh match this season, Brooklyn Lewis led the Golden Bears in kills as she amassed 15 kills on 29 swings to give her a match-best hitting percentage of .379. Her 15 kills also mark the sixth consecutive mark she has reached 15+ as her season average moved to 3.44 kills per set. Hope Schiller added her third double-double of the year with 10 kills and 12 digs in the win.

IN THE POLLS
After sitting in the top spot in the first two AVCA Polls, CSP has ranked #2 over the past two weeks after falling to now-#1 SMSU in the Colorado Premier Challenge title match. Concordia has been a mainstay near the top of the poll for over a decade as they haven't ranked outside the top-10 since 2003 and have spent just one week outside the top-5 since October 2012. The Golden Bears have now spent an incredible 77 weeks at #1 since they debuted there in the 2003 preseason poll. Since the 2007 season, CSP has ranked #1 at least once every season.

NSIC LEADERS
Heading into this weekend, Concordia has gotten production from throughout their lineup with three different players that rank near the top of the NSIC in different statistical categories so far this year.

Setter Elizabeth Mohr leads the way in that regard as she ranks second the nation and first in the NSIC in assists per set while ranking third and first, respectively, in total assists as she amassed an average of 13.41 assists per set while tallying 523 assists overall heading into the week.

The Golden Bears' two middles have been extremely efficient with Sara Macek's .386 hitting percentage ranking fifth in the NSIC while Shelby Seurer's mark of .327 ranks just outside of the top-10.

Tori Hanson rounds out the group as she ranks eighth in the league with 4.39 digs per set.
