SMITHVILLE, Mo. - Concordia-St. Paul men's golf saved its best round of the 2017 NSIC Men's Golf Championship for last, shooting a 308 in the third round to move back into seventh place (929).
Freshman
Noah Rasinski and senior
Chance Maiers charged up the individual leaderboard on the final day as Rasinski was even (72) and Maiers was +1 (73) in the round.
Rasinski moved from an 11th place tie to a sixth place finish while Maiers moved up 11 spots from tied for 25th to tied for 14th.
Rasinski is Concordia's highest individual finisher at the NSIC Championships since the 2013-14 championships when Adam Petterson was an NSIC All-Tournament Team performer by tying for fifth. Maiers gave Concordia two finishers in the top-14 since 2010-11 when Nick Jarrett finished sixth and Jeremy Tetrault finished tied for 11th.
Rasinski finished the tournament ranked second on par four scoring (-2) while Maiers was fifth on par three (+3). Maiers was second in the 50 player field with 35 pars while Rasinski was fifth with 10 birdies.
Rasinski started the day with a birdie on hole 14 as the final round was a shotgun start. He also closed strong with pars on seven straight holes from 18 to six before sinking birdies on seven and 11. On the 13 holes from 18 to 12, Rasinski played -2 golf before ending his round with a bogey to bring him back to even.
Maiers started on 16 and shot par on every hole through seven, a streak of 10 straight pars. After bogeys on eight and 10, Maiers rebounded by finishing with pars on 11 through 15 with the exception of hole 13 - a birdie.
Senior
Trent Anderson turned in another strong effort by shooting sub 80 for a third straight round in the event (79, +7) to give Concordia three players finishing in the top-20 at an NSIC Championship for the fifth time overall and first time since 2011-12.
Anderson's tournament was highlighted by his play on par five holes, finishing even which ranked fifth in the field.
Minnesota State vaulted from fourth to first to capture the league championship, shooting a +3 round as a team (291), the top team round of the tournament to finish at 888. St. Cloud State held second place with a 305 on the day to finish at 901, 13 strokes behind the Mavericks.
Concordia's 308 round was the fourth best score of the third round.
Augustana's Parker Klitzke captured the individual conference championship by finishing -2 over the three rounds despite Saturday's +4 third round. He topped Minnesota State's Ethan Kraus (+1) by three shots for the title. SCSU's David Scharenbroich (+2, 3rd), Minot State's Matthew Kreutz (+4, 4th) and Minnesota State's Kelton Schmitz (+5, 5th) rounded out the top-5 spots on the individual leaderboard.
Concordia will now look ahead to the Cougar Cup hosted by Sioux Falls at the Country Club of Sioux Falls on Monday, April 24 and Tuesday, April 25.
