Concordia heads north for key NSIC series at Minnesota Duluth

Golden Bears (3rd) take on Bulldogs (5th) in battle of top NSIC squads

ST. PAUL, Minn. - This weekend, Concordia-St. Paul baseball (16-4, 9-2 NSIC) takes it hot start to the road against Minnesota Duluth (17-9, 10-4 NSIC) for a four game Northern Sun series between the third and fifth place teams in the league standings. Saturday's games start at 1:30 p.m. with first pitch on Sunday at noon at Bulldog Park in UMD's first home games of 2016.

ONLINE COVERAGE
The games will be available to follow online with a video webcast and live stats fed through the teams' video portal hosted by Stretch Internet.

WEATHER FORECAST
Saturday's high is 63 degrees (low 48) with a partly cloudy sky and slight winds of nine miles per hour from the southeast and a 10 percent chance of rain. On Sunday, the temperatures are projected to reach 66 (low 37) under mostly cloudy conditions and winds once again low at 10 miles per hour (SSW) and a 20 percent chance of rain.

HISTORIC START
The Golden Bears are off to a 9-2 start to NSIC play after starting 9-1 for the first time under 17th-year head coach Mark "Lunch" McKenzie ... the 2005 team started off the NSIC season 10-2 through 12 games en route to a 15-3 NSIC start and 17-5 NSIC finish and the 2003 team started NSIC play 13-2 en route to a 14-4 league record ... the 2016 team's 16-3 overall start matched McKenzie's tenure-best start through 19 games, tying the 2009 season that went on to win a school record 35 overall games (35-18) and those are the only two seasons that also started 16-4 through 20 games.

Concordia is in third place in the Northern Sun at 9-2 (.818), trailing Augustana (11-1, .917) by 1.5 games and top-ranked St. Cloud State (11-2, .846) by 1.0 game. Concordia is ahead of Minnesota Crookston (8-3, .727) 1.0 game and Minnesota Duluth (10-4, .714) by 1.5 games. The top eight teams make the NSIC Tournament with the current cut-off mark being eighth place Winona State (7-8, .467).

Concordia has been ranked in the NCBWA Central Region Top-10 Poll for six consecutive weeks, bumping back up to the sixth spot in this week's rankings for the second time this year. UMD is currently eighth in the poll for the second consecutive week, breaking into the poll at the eight spot two weeks ago for the first time this season.

WEATHER IMPACTING 2016 SEASON
The headline is not exactly breaking news for baseball teams playing in the Upper Midwest, but the Golden Bears have now had eight games cancelled due to weather which consists of over 30 percent of the current 26 scheduled games. The team had a three game non-conference road trip to Upper Iowa wiped out, the second game of a home NSIC doubleheader against Wayne State and most recently a four game weekend NSIC road series at Minnesota Crookston. So far, the team has missed out on three non-conference and five conference games.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
UMD is led by the top power hitter in the country as Alex Wojciechowski leads the nation in home run rate, slugging a school record 17 in 26 games (0.65/game) and is just one total home run shy of Emporia State's Evan Koehler with 18. He also leads the country in RBI per game with 2.08 (54 total) and in slugging at 1.036 while hitting .450 with a .504 on base percentage. The .500-plus OBP is not even leading UMD's squad, though as the Bulldogs have four players getting on base at a .500 or better clip. In fact, five Bulldogs are hitting .410 or better and seven Bulldogs have a .463 or higher on base percentage (among qualified for NCAA leaders, min. 3.0 PA/team game).

Wojciechowski has 37 home runs entering the weekend, three short of UMD's career record and is third in team history with 225 hits.

As a team, UMD's offensive numbers are staggering, ranked second in the nation in slugging (.607) and third in the country in hitting (.363), on base (.454) and home runs (1.77/game, 46 total) while scoring the seventh most runs per contest (9.4).

While UMD is in contention for the nation's top offense with Concordia's Wednesday split St. Cloud State, the Bulldogs' pitching staff does not compare to that of the top ranked Huskies. UMD's staff has a 6.69 ERA, ranking 201 of 254 teams in the country, allowing 11.47 hits per 9 innings (234th), a 1.6 strikeout-walk ratio (167th) and a 1.81 team WHIP (203rd) while issuing 4.82 walks per 9 innings (201st). The defense also ranks 234th of 254 with a .937 team mark.

UMD had a rough open to the season, dropping three of four in-region games at Pittsburg State in late February including a pair of 1-run losses before rebounding to a 6-2 spring trip to Auburndale, Florida at the RussMatt Central Florida Invite. UMD opened NSIC play by winning three of four at Minnesota State before a four game split at Winona State. Last weekend, the Bulldogs took three of four at Sioux Falls including scoring 48 runs on the first day of the series in 14 innings. On Wednesday, UMD swept SMSU in Marshall. Since the 1-3 start, UMD is 16-6 including a 10-4 NSIC record. The Bulldogs have generated 10-plus runs 10 times on the year.
