LAKE CITY, Minn. — The Concordia-St. Paul men's golf team wrapped up the first round of play at the Jewel Invitational this afternoon in Lake City. The Golden Bears ended the day in second place after shooting a collective 291 (+3) in the opening round.
CSP was led by freshman Brennan Weckwerth who shot a 68 (-4) in the opening round, putting together an impressive afternoon with four birdies and 14 pars. Weckwerth did not drop a shot the entire round to end the day in first place individually with a one stroke lead, while leading all players in pars.
Weckwerth's 68 is the ninth lowest single round score in program history, tied with nine others for ninth place. Josh Esterley holds the program record with a 65 (-7) at the 2024 Jewel Invitational.
Esterley ended the opening round with a score of 72 (E) to sit in a tie for seventh place. The senior birdied three times in round one while making par on 12 holes. For Esterley it is his 19th even par or better round in three seasons with CSP.
Carson Boe carded a 75 (+3) in the opening round of play, notching three birdies to go along with 10 pars on the afternoon. Tyler Gandrud was CSP's final scorer, ending the day with a 76 (+4) after recording two birdies and 11 pars in the first round.
Sean Leutner rounded out the CSP five with a score of 77 (+5) on day one. Leutner led all golfers in round one with an impressive seven birdies on his scorecard.
Four Golden Bears competed individually in round one, Camden O'Malley led the way with a 76 (+4) in the opening round putting together an impressive two birdie, 11 par scorecard. Jayden Manthei carded a 78 (+6) in round one, with one birdie on hole 12.
Sam Rudolph carded a 78 (+6) as well, with birdies on holes three and seven. Cale Thompson ended the first round with a score of 80 (+8), birdying once on hole 16.
Winona State ended the day in first place as a team with a collective score of 287 (-1) in round one. CSP sits two strokes ahead of third place Minnesota State, who shot a 293 (+5) in the opening round.
Brennan Weckwerth holds a one stroke lead entering round two with Winona State's Logan Chouinard and Bemidji State's Myles Jord shooting a 69 (-3) in the opening round.
The final round of the Jewel Invitational gets underway tomorrow morning at the Jewel Golf Course in Lake City.
