Golden Bears complete final tune-ups ahead of NSIC Championships

Concordia athletes competed at three meets across Minnesota and Wisconsin over the weekend

MANKATO, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul track and field teams completed their final tune-ups ahead of the NSIC Outdoor Championships, competing at three meets across Minnesota and Wisconsin on Friday and Saturday.

A small group of CSP athletes competed at the Bager Challenge in Madison, Wis. and the Meet of the UnSaintly in St. Paul, Minn. on Friday, while a larger group of Golden Bears competed at the Tim Marshall Open in Mankato, Minn. on Saturday.

In Mankato, junior Mehlayna Straub recorded a new personal record in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 14.28 seconds to place fourth in finals after qualifying with a time of 14.47 seconds in the preliminaries. Straub also placed third in the javelin, setting a new personal record with a distance of 118' 9".

Junior Desiree Loyd set a new season best in the high jump, winning the event with a height of 5' 4.5".

Senior Karlina Zimmerman placed second in the 400-meter dash, clocking a season-best time of 59.33 seconds.

Sophomore Mackenzie Lovejoy also recorded a season-best time, finishing the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.60 to finish fourth.

For the Concordia men in Mankato, junior Will Hugo recorded a new personal record in the javelin throw, placing third with a toss of 140' 9".

Sophomore Cam Mata also logged a third-place finish after clearing 24' 1" in the long jump.

In the pole vault, Abid Alam finished in fourth place with a height of 12' 5.25".

The CSP relay squad of John Schmitz, Jayden Kuhlman, James Howard, and Zay Acosta won the 4x400-meter relay after clocking a time of 3:29.25.

Kuhlman also secured a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.39 seconds.

The Golden Bears will now set their sights on the NSIC Outdoor Championships, scheduled for Thursday-Saturday in Duluth, Minn.
