ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Golden Bear men's golf team tied for 13th at the NCAA Central/Midwest Regional held at the par-71 St. Joseph Country Club. Concordia-St. Paul totaled a score of 883 (+31) after rounds of 294 (+10), 299 (+15) and 290 (+6).
This marked the program's highest finish ever at the NCAA Regionals beating the 17th-place finish in 2009-10. The Golden Bears also tallied the best score at an NCAA Regional in program history beating 2021-22's 922 (+58) by 27 strokes.
Tommy Marker tallied the highest finish of any Golden Bear in the tournament tying for 27th with a total of 219 (+6). That ties for the third-best total score in program history at an NCAA Regional. T-27th is the fourth-highest finish by a Golden Bear at a regional tournament.
Marker shot 74 (+3) on Saturday with a 39 (+4) on the front nine and a strong 35 (-1) on the back nine. He shot rounds of 74 (+3), 71 (E) and 74 (+3) with his second round tying for the fifth-lowest in program history. He finished Saturday with back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18. The senior had seven birdies and tied for the team-high in pars with 35 during the tournament.
Josh Esterley led CSP in round three shooting the best round of any Golden Bear on the weekend at 70 (-1). That ties for the third-best round at regionals in program history. Esterley shot 35 (E) on the front nine and hit three birdies on the back nine to shoot 35 (-1).
The sophomore totaled four birdies, 11 pars and three bogeys in the round. He finished with 29 pars and six birdies in the tournament. Esterley shot rounds of 76 (+5), 81 (+10) and 70 (-1) to total 227 (+14) and tie for 85th. That is the 12th-best score for a CSP golfer at regionals.
Thomas Gutzmer tied for 44th with a total of 221 (+8), also tying for the sixth-best score at regionals in program history. Gutzmer tied the ninth-best regional round in CSP history on Saturday with a 73 (+2). He shot 38 (+3) on the front nine before hitting four birdies on the back nine to help shoot 35 (-1). The senior shot three birdies on his final four holes.
Gutzmer's rounds were 71 (E), 77 (+6) and 73 (+2). His first round tied for the fifth-best regional round. Gutzmer led the Golden Bears in birdies with nine and finished with 30 total pars.
Tyler Debruyckere matched Gutzmer's 73 (+2) in the third round to finish with a 223 (+10) total and tie for 56th. He had the only eagle for the Golden Bears in the tournament on hole 18. The freshman shot 36 (+1) on the front nine and 37 (+1) on the back nine.
Debruyckere finished with the eighth-best regional total and his 73 (+2) tied for the ninth-best regional round in program history. He finished the tournament with rounds of 75 (+4), 75 (+4) and 73 (+2). His eight total birdies were the second most on the team.
Trey Timm shot rounds of 74 (+3), 76 (+5) and 75 (+4) for a total of 225 (+12) and tied for 72nd. He knocked in birdies on holes five and 11. Timm tied for the second-best score on par threes of any golfer at the tournament shooting one-over-par.
The junior tied for the team-high in pars with 35 total while adding six birdies. His 225 (+12) is the ninth-best regional score in program history.
The Golden Bears tied for 13th with Henderson State (Ark.). CSP was two strokes behind Washburn (Mo.) in 12th place and two strokes ahead of Hillsdale (Mich.) and Wayne State (Mich.) in 15th place.
Concordia excelled on the final two holes of each round. The Golden Bears combined for a team score of 32 (-8) on them in the third round. The team had a combined score of 103 (-17) in the tournament on the final two holes.
Central Oklahoma won the NCAA Central/Midwest Regional with a team score of 847 (-5) after rounds of 280 (-4), 292 (+8) and 275 (-9). The Bronchos' third-round score was the best of any team at the tournament.
Missouri St. Louis placed second with a score of 862 (+10) as they vaulted up the rankings shooting 277 (-7) in round three. Missouri S&T took third shooting 866 (+14) and Central Missouri placed fourth shooting 867 (+15). UCM shot 276 (-8) in the third round. The top four teams qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships.
Nicholas Canales of Central Oklahoma and Marco Anderson of Washburn tied for first place shooting 207 (-6). Canales vaulted up the rankings with a 66 (-5) on Saturday. Anderson qualified for nationals as an individual.
The record-breaking season comes to an end for the Golden Bears as they broke the school record for wins in a season with five total first-place finishes. The team's season average of 291.2 is the best in program history and the Golden Bears have improved this mark every year since 2021-22.
