Golden Bear women’s golf tied for second after first round of Augustana Spring Invite

Barstad, DeLong and Hill each tied for seventh individually shooting 80 (+8)

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Darby Barstad, Rebecca DeLong and Piper Hill each ended the first round tied for seventh shooting 80 (+8) to help the Golden Bear women's golf team finish tied for second at the Augustana Spring Invite. 

The Golden Bears shot 322 (+34) on the day to tie with Sioux Falls (S.D.) at Elmwood Country Club. This marks the second-best round for CSP this spring behind the 318 (+30) the team shot at the Southwest Minnesota State Spring Invite. 

Barstad started the day strong shooting 38 (+2) on the front nine with seven pars and two bogeys. The junior then shot 42 (+6) on the back nine and finished the day strong with two pars. 80 (+8) marked her third-best round this season. 

DeLong shot 41 (+5) on the front nine and 39 (+3) on the back nine. She totaled a team-high 11 pars with six bogeys and one double bogey. The sophomore's 80 (+8) ties for her second-best round of the season. 

Hill started her day with a double bogey on hole one and bogeyed the following three holes. After that, she shot three over par with one double bogey, two bogeys, 10 pars and a birdie on her final hole of the day. She shot 42 (+6) on the front nine and 38 (+2) on the back nine. Her 80 (+8) marked her best round of the spring season. 

Ella Matzke's 82 (+10) rounded out the top four scorers for the Golden Bears. She hit one the team's two birdies on the day putting one in on hole 11. She added six pars and 11 bogeys to her scorecard and shot 39 (+3) on the back nine. 

Marina Allen shot 89 (+17) with rounds of 45 (+9) and 44 (+8). The freshman tallied three pars on the day on holes two, 12 and 15. 

The Golden Bears finished the first round with a nine-stroke lead over Southwest Minnesota State, South Dakota Mines and Minot State all tied for fourth place. Augustana is in first place six strokes ahead of the Golden Bears and Cougars at 316 (+6). 

There is a four-way tie for first place individually at 78 (+6) featuring three Augustana players in Payton Drefke, Lanie Veenendall and Anna Eckmann. Sioux Falls' Maggie Veenendall is also tied for first place. Barstad, DeLong and Hill are three of five players tied for seventh place two strokes behind the leaders. 

The tournament resumes on Tuesday with second-round action.
