SERIES HISTORY: WSU 21, CSP 4
The Golden Bears aim to snap an 8-game losing streak to the Warriors including a 4-game road skid.
Concordia's last win over Winona State was a road win, 31-28 in 2014, its only road victory at WSU in 11 trips.
Coach Currier holds a 1-10 career record against the Warriors, securing a 23-20 overtime win at home at Griffin Stadium in 2003 in CSP's first NSIC Championship season.
Concordia is 0-6 in road games at Winona State under Coach Currier, who has led the program from 2000-03 and again from 2016-present.
LAST MEETING, 2024: WINONA STATE 31, CSP 14
In its home opener, CSP rushed for over 200 yards behind
Jaylin Richardson's 131 yards on 6.6 per carry in a 31-14 loss to Winona State.
It was Concordia's second loss in home openers under head coach
Shannon Currier, who is now 10-3 in home openers with 2025's result against UMD.
CSP's offensive line paved the way for a team effort that included 33 carries for 211 rushing yards, a 6.4 team average.
That was the tone CSP set on its opening drive as Richardson ripped off runs of 16, 10 and 33 yards on the first three plays of the game, setting up a 4-yard TD run by wide receiver
Troy Ellison.
CSP's opening drive was seven plays, 75 yards and 3:50, but the Warriors responded with a 16-play, 75-yard drive that spanned eight minutes and including one key third down along with a fourth down conversion to keep it alive, tying the game with 3:10 to play in the quarter.
The teams then traded TDs again in the second quarter, with WSU converting an 11-play, 63-yard, 6:01 drive for a TD with 10:31 to play until half, followed by a
Daniel Hornacek 1-yard TD run as CSP cashed in on an 8-play, 75-yard march on a 4:40 drive.
The Warriors were able to take the lead on a 38-yard FG by Jacob Scott with two seconds to play.
Richardson had topped 100 rushing yards by halftime while Hornacek had 4-46 rushing by his side. CSP only needed to pass four times in the first half as a result of the dominant rushing effort.
In the second half, CSP opened with a big defensive play, with linebacker
Brayden Hilgemann forcing a fumble recovered by cornerback
McKinley Egland-Young, but CSP came up empty on downs, unable to capitalize on the momentum.
The defense came through on the next drive, as well, with linebacker
Ben Rehl getting a first-down sack followed by
Isaiah Wray's third-down sack to force a three-and-out, and
Caden Baarts' near-blocked punt rushed WSU into a short 16-yard punt to give CSP the ball at the WSU 45-yard line.
But another three-and-out by the offense, this time a first down negated by a holding penalty, gave WSU the ball back with a 17-14 lead.
At this point, WSU continued its trend of scoring one TD per quarter, scoring on a 9-play, 80-yard drive with 4:08 to play in the third quarter for a 24-14 lead.
CSP's defense came through with another big stop, with QB
Reed Styer executing a drive into WSU's territory, getting inside the 30-yard line before coming up empty on a 43-yard FG attempt that would have made it a one-possession game.
In the fourth quarter, WSU came through with a decisive 8-play, 75-yard drive with 5:08 to play in the game to put the game away, 31-14, as the WSU defense held CSP scoreless in the second half. The drive included a big 3rd-and-11 pickup from their own 35-yard line, and scored the big TD on a 3rd-and-3 from the 32.
Styer completed 14-25 for 91 yards on the day, and added 5-12 rushing. He targeted 10 different options, finding
Carter Ryan for 3-20.
Richardson finished 20-131 while Hornacek was 5-51.
The CSP defense was led by Rehl's nine tackles, 1.5 TFLs and a sack while
Cyrus McClure had eight tackles with 0.5 TFL.
Cole Stenstrom led WSU by completing 21-27 for 257 yards, connecting with Sylvere Campbell for 8-136. Cair'ron Hendred led WSU's ground game with 15-99 and two TDs while Ty Gavin had 12-54 and two TDs.
