Golden Bear men’s golf finishes 18th in opening tournament of the season

Gutzmer finishes 37th; Marker jumps 18 places after third round

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The Concordia-St. Paul men's golf team finished the third and final round at "The Mule" on Tuesday. CSP placed 18th out of 20 teams shooting 900 (+60) on the par-70 golf course at Mules National Golf Club. 

The Golden Bears were led by senior Thomas Gutzmer placing 37th shooting 221 (+11). After finishing yesterday +1, Gutzmer shot +10 in round three. The senior finished the tournament with seven birdies and 34 pars. 

Senior Tommy Marker jumped 18 places on day two. Marker improved by two strokes every round at 76 (+6), 74 (+4) and 72 (+2) to score 222 (+12). Marker had 12 pars and two birdies in round three, finishing with 31 and eight birdies in total. 

After shooting 82 (+12) in round one, freshman Dane Berggren rebounded with solid rounds of 73 (+3) in round two and 74 (+4) in round three. His total of 229 (+19) landed him in 76th place, jumping 11 spots from Monday. 

Trey Timm shot 79 (+9) in round three to finish with a total score of 236 (+26) placing 94th. Chase Camilli rounded out the team placing 100th with a total score of 239 (+29). 

The Golden Bears finished three stokes behind Newman in 17th and three strokes ahead of Southwest Oklahoma State in 19th. Central Oklahoma won the tournament shooting 839 (-1) as a team. Central Missouri's A-team finished in second at 853 (+13) and the Mules' B-team finished in third at 858 (+18). Minnesota Crookston led the NSIC in fourth place. 

Central Oklahoma finished with the top two golfers in the tournament with Nicholas Canales in first shooting 204 (-6) and Jordan Wilson shooting 205 (-5). Andrew Wilhelm of Minnesota Crookston had the best finish of an NSIC golfer in 10th place shooting 212 (+2). 

Concordia will be back in action next week on Sept. 16-17 as the team hosts the CSP/MSU Fall Brawl. The Golden Bears placed second in last year's tournament at Troy Burne Golf Club in Hudson, Wis.
