EDMOND, Okla. - The NCAA Central/Midwest Regional started on Thursday, and CSP's Brandon Sperling is tied for 35th after shooting 71 (+1) in the first round. Sperling tied his one-over-par scores from last season for the fifth-lowest round in school history at an NCAA Regional Tournament.
The junior golfer started the day on hole 10 at the par-70 Kickingbird Golf Course. Sperling hit par on his first eight holes of the day before shooting two bogeys on the turn. His highlight of the day was getting back to even with a hole-four eagle, which was one of nine eagles in the first round by all golfers.
Sperling hit two pars, two bogeys and a birdie in the last five holes. His 71 (+1) tied his lowest score over par at an NCAA regional tournament in his career after he shot 73 (+1) in the final two rounds last season. Noah Rasinski is also tied in fifth place in school history with Sperling after shooting one-over-par in 2018. Zack Taylor holds the program record regional round, shooting 69 (-3) in 2022.
Caleb Miller of Southern Arkansas and Manuel Cue of Grand Valley State lead the tournament, shooting 65 (-5). Minnesota State's Jack Klimek is the top golfer from the NSIC tied for 23rd shooting 70 (E).
Missouri S&T and Harding are leading the team race, shooting 276 (-4). Minnesota State (+16) and Winona State (+17) are at the bottom of the leaderboard in 19th and 20th respectively.
Sperling is scheduled to start second-round play tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
