ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Concordia-St. Paul men's golf team competed in the Holiday Inn Express Classic on Monday hosted by Missouri Western State. After 36 holes on the par-71 course at the St. Joseph Country Club, the Golden Bears are tied for eighth place in the 17-team field.
Brandon Sperling is the top golfer for the Golden Bears after shooting a total of 146 (+4) on the 6,612-yard course. Sperling shot 73 (+2) in each of the first two rounds. He tallied four birdies in round one and three in round two. Sperling also totaled nine pars in round one and 11 in round two.
Thomas Gutzmer was one stroke behind and is tied for 28th place. Gutzmer shot a 73 (+2) in round one and a 74 (+3) in round two to finish at 147 (+5). Gutzmer shot three birdies in round one and two in round two.
Trey Timm tied for the lowest round by a CSP golfer with a 72 (+1) in round two. He shot a 77 (+6) in round one. Timm finished the day tied for 43rd with a total score of 149 (+7). After having an up-and-down first round with three birdies and six pars, Timm calmed down in the second round posting two birdies and 13 pars.
Ben Rasinski tied for 51st shooting 150 (+8). After a first round score of 72 (+1) which featured five birdies, Rasinski shot a 78 (+7) in round two. Hunter Robinson finished the day in a tie for 57th after shooting rounds of 74 (+3) and 77 (+6) to total 151 (+9).
In the overall individual race, Jeffery Johnston of Missouri Western State leads the field with a score of 133 (-9). He shot a 66 (-5) in round one and a 67 (-4) in round two. Missouri Southern State's Tradgon McCrae and Ben Marckmann are tied for second place with an overall score of 134 (-8). Alessandro Trenta of Winona State is the NSIC's top golfer in fourth place shooting 135 (-7).
Missouri Southern State leads the team race with a total score of 561 (-7). Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State are tied for second at 578 (+10). Winona State is in first place with a score of 579 (+11).
Concordia-St. Paul is tied with Rockhurst for eighth place with a team score of 588 (+20). They trial by seven strokes to Minnesota State in seventh place and lead Washburn in 10th place by one stroke. The Golden Bears will be back in action on Tuesday at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start for the third and final round of the Holiday Inn Classic.
