WAYNE, Neb. - Sophomore
Anna Tollette won her first career collegiate tournament, taking first among 72 competitors at the Wildcat Invitational on Monday and Tuesday. Her performance atop the leaderboard helped the Golden Bears take second as a team in the 10-team tournament hosted by Wayne State at the Wayne Country Club.
Tollette held a 1-shot lead after round one following her par performance, and held onto her individual grip at the top of the standings following a round two score of 78 to finish +6 overall with a career-best 150. She edged Nebraska-Kearney's Faviola Gonzalez, who nearly shot the inverse score, shooting a 78-73 to finish with a 151 (+7). UNK's Allison Comer, who trailed by a stroke after round one, turned in a 79 in the second round and finished two shots back of Tollete at 152 (+9).
It's the team's first individual medalist honor of the season and also the first since Sophie Hill won a pair of tournaments in the 2018-19 season, the first two of the fall season at the Tracy Lane Memorial in Bemidji and the Golden Bear Classic.
The Golden Bears also produced a second place finish for the second time this season, along with the 2021-22 fall season debut at the Tracy Lane Memorial in Bemidji in a 10-team field. They turned in rounds of 306-316 to finish at 622 (+46), seven shots behind tournament winner Nebraska-Kearney. CSP topped Wayne State (626) by four shots and Augustana (629) by seven. They shot their top round of the season in round one, and followed it up with their third-best performance in round two, producing their best tournament score of the season by five shots.
Tollette had company from her own team in the top-10 of the leaderboard as
Jessica Hagman came in with a sixth-place finish, leading the team in the second round with a 77 to finish at 155 (+11) overall for a new career-best tournament score. It was also Hagman's first-ever top-10 finish as a Golden Bear.
Isabella Dory, who led the team in scoring average entering the tournament, produced a consistent 79-79, right on pace with her 79.75 season average and returning to her fall form when she shot seven of her first eight rounds of the season under 80. She finished 17th overall, one shot ahead of teammate
Erika Olson who finished at 159 with rounds of 77-82 as all four players scoring on the card went under 160.
The team now looks ahead to the NSIC Championships to be played at Paradise Pointe Golf Club in Smithville, Missouri from April 22-24.
