Sperling leads Golden Bears to eighth place finish in spring debut

Sperling takes 13th of 95 while CSP men's golf finishes eighth of 18

HENDERSON, Nevada - Concordia-St. Paul men's golf opened the spring season with a strong debut tournament result, finishing eighth in a crowded 18 team field while sophomore Brandon Sperling led the squad by placing 13th in a field of 95 competitors.

Concordia (639) was the second finishing Northern Sun squad behind third place Winona State (611), the host of the tournament played at The Legacy Golf Club. CSP finished ahead of league members 10th place Augustana (645), 12th place UMary (652), 15th place Sioux Falls (662) and 16th place Minot State (664).

Northeastern State (Okla.) won the event at 604, carrying a 305 in the first round and a 299 in round two. Westminster College (Utah) came in with the low team round in the tournament with its 288 in round two, finishing four strokes back from Northeastern State in second place.

Individually, Sperling knocked five shots off his score for round two, coming in with a 74 to move up a spot in the final player rankings with a 153 (79-74).

While Sperling had a strong five shot improvement, Hunter Robinson made the biggest second day noise with a nine shot adjustment in round two, shooting a 76 to finish second on the team (161), one shot ahead of Ben Rasinski who had a consistent 82-80 tournament.

The team's second through fifth place finishers were separated by just four total shots in the two round event and all five players in the lineup scored among the top four.

CSP also fielded a B team, with Nick Navarro leading the team with a pair of 79 rounds to finish at 158, 29th in the overall field and second among all Golden Bears regardless of team designation.

Concordia will continue its spring season at the Conference Preview hosted at Adams Pointe GC in Blue Springs, Missouri on March 28-29.
