INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - For the sixth time since 2016, Concordia University, St. Paul student-athletes have posted a 90-plus percent Academic Success Rate (ASR) to earn the 2022 DII Presidents' Award for Academic Excellence, as announced by the NCAA this week.
Concordia is one of two institutions from the Northern Sun (NSIC) to be featured among the 44 NCAA Division II award-winning schools nationwide, joined by Augustana University (S.D.). Concordia has been recognized with the award four years in a row and six times overall, all coming in the past seven years (2016, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022).
"Concordia is committed to credible career outcomes in responsive and relevant majors from which students can continue into their chosen career aspirations," said
Dr. Eric LaMott, Provost and Chief Operating Officer. "We are so pleased and proud that the hard work of our student-athletes, faculty and staff continues to embody itself in meaningful athletic and academic successes."
The Presidents' Award for Academic Excellence is awarded to Division II schools that have achieved a four-cohort (2012-15) Academic Success Rate of 90% or higher. The Division II ASR includes transfers into a school in the calculation and removes those who transferred out while academically eligible. The NCAA and the federal government measure time to graduate within a six-year window of first-time enrollment. Thus, the graduation rates for the 2012-2015 cohorts would have been reported from 2019 to 2022.
"As an institution, we prioritize academic success for our student-athletes, and are proud that they have lived that out by earning this prestigious honor," added Director of AthleticsÂ
Regan McAthie. "It is a testament to the hard work they have executed in the classroom and beyond, and it would not be possible without the support that they receive from our incredible faculty and staff."
The ASR also includes the more than 30,000 non-scholarship student-athletes who were enrolled in the four years covered in the most recent data. Even when using the less-inclusive federal graduation rate, student-athletes are outperforming their peers in the general student population by 8 percentage points. For Division II student-athletes, the federal rate is 60%, while the general student body federal rate is 52%.
"I am excited to honor and recognize the 44 schools for this prestigious award," said
Steven Shirley, president of Minot State University (N.D.) and chair of the Division II Presidents' Council. "It is a testament to their hard work, commitment and dedication to achieving academic excellence."
This is the highest Division II total and one more than last year's former top mark (43 in 2021-22) in the 12th year the award has been given. CSP is one year shy of the eight schools that have earned the award every year: Assumption, Bentley, Eckerd, Hillsdale, Rockhurst, Rollins, Saint Michael's and Seattle Pacific.
