Newton, Kan. – The Concordia-St. Paul men's golf team wrapped up their fall season with a big win on Tuesday at the Newman Invitational with a team score of 893 (+29). The Golden Bears shot rounds of 305, 295, and 293 to win the tournament by three strokes over Missouri Southern State. Combined with their Bemidji Invite victory, it is the first time the CSP men's golf team has ever won two tournaments in a fall season.
The 54-hole tournament was hosted by Newman University at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course and included a field of 16 schools.Weather played a factor on both days with freezing temperatures causing delayed start times. The tournament spanned two days with the first round and around half of the second round on Monday, and the remainder of round two and round three on Tuesday.
Brandon Sperling was back in the top five for the third time this fall, tying for fourth place and shooting rounds of 74, 74, and 73 to finish with 221 strokes (+5). The junior finished tied for the second best par-4 scoring average (3.97) and tied for tenth in birdies (8).
Hunter Robinson had the biggest climb of any CSP golfer in the third round, jumping 14 spots to finish in eighth place, with a total of 222 strokes (+6), one off from his 54-hole record. He tied for the second most birdies in the tournament with 10 and was tied for seventh in par-4 scoring (4.13).
Thomas Huettl had an up and down tournament in the cold, with rounds of 83, 70, and 74. His total of 227 strokes (+11) put him in a tie for 17th, his fourth top 20 finish of the fall. He was one of only ten golfers in the field of 85 with an eagle. Kurt Lambert was right behind him with 228 strokes (+12), tying for 20th. His total score and round one score of 72 were both season best's for the junior.
Ben Rasinski had the best 54-hole tournament of his career, shooting a 234 (+18) and tying for 43rd.
The Bears will return to action in the spring and look to continue to build on the success of the fall and defend their 2021-22 NSIC golf championship.
