ST. PAUL, Minn. – Concordia-St. Paul head football coach
Shannon Currier has announced the promotion of
Mike Bond to a full-time position on the 2021 coaching staff. In addition, Currier has announced the addition of
Adam Kiefer and former NFL wide receiver
Michael Floyd as assistant coaches.
"Coach Bond does an outstanding job building relationships with student-athletes, he's committed to their growth as men and plays an integral role in our culture," said Coach Currier. "As a coach, he's a tremendous recruiter and has done a fantastic job with the cornerbacks, and now in his new role he'll be coaching the entire defensive backfield which we're excited about."
"Thank you to President Brian Friedrich, Dr. Cheryl Chatman, Coach
Shannon Currier and Coach
Craig Stern for believing in me and taking a chance on a young coach from Milwaukee," said Coach Bond.
The moves come as former assistant coach Ollie Taylor has left the program for a position on the staff at Hampton University, an NCAA Division I FCS program in Virginia. Additionally, former assistant coaches Kerry Grigsby and EJ Shelby have accepted full time coaching positions elsewhere, with Grigsby taking a post at Ithaca College in New York, where former CSP coach Trevor Warner is defensive coordinator. Shelby has accepted a position on the staff at Kentucky Christian.
"Part of my job as head coach is to help our younger coaches, who aren't in full-time roles, gain full-time opportunities. And as sad as it is to lose coaches, it's part of small college football where guys work hard to earn themselves a full-time salary to do a job they love," said Coach Currier. He continued, "I'm confident that they'll be outstanding additions to the staffs they are joining, and it's also good that we've groomed quality coaches who could fill needs back at CSP in the future. With some of these changes this summer, there's opportunity for new coaches to shine and make an impact on the program."
Bond has been with the program since 2018 and will continue to coach defensive backs while also adding assistant recruiting coordinator duties to his role. He has also been instrumental in the program as leadership and team building coordinator and mental health and wellness coordinator. His time on campus has transcended football, working as a program assistant for the Dr. Cheryl Troutman Chapman Diversity Center.
"God never let me forget who I am during the journey and whom I serve along the way. I am thankful for everyone who held me accountable and believed in me along the way," said Coach Bond. He continued, "I've been able to build strong relationships with students and players during my time at the University, both in the program and outside of football. It means so much to me that the University believed in me to have responsibilities outside of football where I have experience, allowing me to work and build relationships across campus."
Bond holds a master's degree in clinical mental health counseling from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in 2017 with an emphasis in AODA and child/adolescence counseling and earned his undergraduate degree in vocational rehabilitation with an emphasis in mental health and recreational rehabilitation from UW-Stout.
Kiefer joins the Golden Bears from Augustana University in South Dakota, where he was a tight end coach for the Vikings for the previous two seasons. Prior to his position at Augie, he spent two years on the staff at Knox College in Illinois, working with the linebackers before moving over to the offense in the spring 2019 season to work with wide receivers.
The Watertown, South Dakota native started his coaching career at his alma mater, Northern State University where he gained experience coaching tight ends, running backs and quarterbacks for the Wolves.
He earned his degree in 2015 in sport marketing and administration before earning his master's at NSU in sport performance and leadership in 2017.
Kiefer will coach the quarterbacks at CSP, and as a result of the coaching changes, Currier has also announced that
Peter Bisson will coach the wide receivers in 2021.
Floyd joins the Golden Bears to work with the wide receivers. He brings instant credibility to the field staff, as the Cretin-Derham Hall High School standout was a first-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft to the Arizona Cardinals out of the University of Notre Dame where he had 100 catches for 1,147 yards and nine touchdowns as a senior for the Fighting Irish, registering at least 700 yards all four years and totaling 3,686 yards and 37 touchdowns in his career.
In the NFL, Floyd played eight years including five with the Cardinals where he had 1,041 yards and five touchdowns in his top year in 2013. He played in 102 games, racking up 266 catches for 3,959 yards and 27 total touchdowns. His career included a Super Bowl ring in the 2016 season with the New England Patriots and also featured a stop with the Minnesota Vikings in 2017.
The rest of the 2020 football staff remains intact under Currier, who enters his sixth year after rejoining the program in 2016. He also served as head coach from 2000 to 2003. This will be Currier's ninth season and 10
th overall year as the 2020 season was cancelled due to COVID-19.
