MARSHALL, Minn.- The Concordia-St. Paul women's soccer team improved to 8-6-2 (7-4-2 NSIC) on Friday night after securing a 2-1 win over Southwest Minnesota State (4-10-1, 3-9-1 NSIC).
The Golden Bears, who entered play in seventh in the league standings with 20 points, picked up three points with the win to tie the University of Mary for fifth place, moving ahead of top-10 regionally-ranked Northern State with 21. The Marauders and Wolves each dropped road games tonight, allowing CSP to move up with the win.
For the Golden Bears, sophomore midfielder
Sophie Pawlyshyn and junior defender
Ciara Bailey helped secure a victory on the road.
Head Coach
Steve Bellis commented on the contest, "It was a game of opportunities created by CSP and not taken. In the end, two scrappy goals got us through and got us the result we deserved with the balance of play being ours."
Pawlyshyn's goal in the 68th minute tied the match while also giving Pawlyshyn her fourth goal of the 2021 season. She now leads her squad and ranks 12th on the NSIC leaderboard with 13 total points. The sophomore also led the Bears with four shots and two shots on goal, putting her at 18th in the NSIC with 18 shots in 15 games played.
Bailey earned her second goal of the season in the 78th minute, totaling four points on the season. The late goal proved to be the game-winner, earning Bailey her second game-winning goal in 2021 and securing her 12th place spot in the NSIC in that category.
Both Golden Bear goals were unassisted.
In her third career start, freshman goalkeeper
Ashlyn Waldon faced two shots and made one save while playing the entire 90 minutes. She now has five games played with the CSP squad, allowing only two goals against.
Defenders
Cayla Renwick,
Tori Miller, and
Ciara Bailey also all managed to play the entirety of the contest, a feat not uncommon to the Golden Bear backfield.
As the Bears look ahead, Coach Bellis adds, "We need to keep this momentum going."
The Golden Bears will return home to Sea Foam Stadium to host Sioux Falls. The match with the Cougars on Sunday, Oct. 31 will be played at 1 p.m. Following the weekend, the Golden Bears will wrap up the 2021 regular season at home against Minnesota State the next Friday.
