Golden Bears shut out Sioux Falls in 3-0 victory

CSP advances to 6th in NSIC

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Concordia-St. Paul women's soccer team improved to 9-6-2 (8-4-2 NSIC) on Sunday afternoon after a 3-0 shutout victory over Sioux Falls (3-11-3, 3-8-3 NSIC).

With the victory, the Golden Bears now have 23 points and advance to sixth place in the NSIC. The CSP squad sits three points behind UMary in fifth while #24 Minnesota State remains in the first place position with 37 points after a 2-0 win over Southwest Minnesota State on Oct. 31. Northern State sits right below the Bears with 21 points in seventh place.

Head Coach Steve Bellis commented on the win, "[It was] a good victory vs a stubborn team who sat deep. Defensively, we did not give them anything and earned the shutout."

With her penalty kick goal in the fourth minute, Katie Anderson earned her seventh goal of the 2021 season and now leads her squad with goals and points (14). She also ranks sixth in the conference for goals while her six shots and four shots on goal on Sunday has her in first and third in the league in those categories, respectively.

Jena Berkland's goal in the 44th minute is her fifth of the season, giving her a 10th place position on the NSIC leaderboard and a third place mark among Golden Bears with 12 points. Jessica Timpane had an assist on the score and earned her third assist in 2021, a tied-second place mark for her squad.

The third goal for the Golden Bears was scored by Nikki Anderson in the 80th minute and was her second on the season. With her pass, Bethany Weller earned her first assist of the season.

As a squad, the Golden Bears fired 24 shots with 13 on frame and held the Cougars to only three shots and three shots on goal.

In her fourth start, freshman goalkeeper Ashlyn Waldon faced three shots and made three saves. It was also the keeper's second career shutout in six games played and helped her team earn their sixth shutout of the season. Waldon has now made 17 saves (0.895 average) and played 426 minutes, allowing only two goals against.

The Golden Bears will host #24 Minnesota State for their last match of the 2021 season on Friday, Nov. 5 at 5 p.m. at Sea Foam Stadium. As the Bears look to the season end, Coach Bellis adds, "We've got some momentum building as we hit the playoffs. Go, Bears!"
