Golden Bears shut out Upper Iowa 4-0

Bears sweep Homecoming Weekend series

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The Concordia women's soccer team improved to 6-4-1 (5-2-1 NSIC) after a 4-0 win against Upper Iowa on Sunday. With the win, the Golden Bear squad swept Homecoming weekend and currently sits at 6th in the NSIC standings.

Head Coach Steve Bellis mentioned after the contest, "After a tricky first half, and a stubborn Upper Iowa, we found some good possession and some brilliant finishes."

It was sophomore midfielder Sophie Pawlyshyn who had a solid effort on the afternoon. With two goals (56th minute, unassisted and 84th minute, assisted by Sammy Ponsonby) and one assist, she helped carry the Golden Bear offense to victory. The two goals on Sunday were her first two of the season. Through ten games, Pawlyshyn ranks 5th in the NSIC in assists with four.

Freshman forward Corynn Grabau and redshirt freshman midfielder Abby Kloiber also had one goal apiece against the Peacocks. Grabau's goal in the 19th minute proved to be the game-winner and secured for her the 2nd place spot on her squad in goals with four on the season. Kloiber's goal in the 81st minute (assisted by Jena Berkland) earns her a spot tied for 3rd with Berkland, each with three goals thus far.

With her assist today, freshman forward Sammy Ponsonby has collected two goals and two assists for a total of six points this season.

Defenders Tori Miller and Cayla Renwick as well as goalkeeper Jessi Jordan all played the full 90 minutes. All three players lead their squad in minutes played in 2021.

Jordan also earned her third shutout win of the season. Through her eleven games played, she now ranks 6th in the league in shutouts. She made one save against Upper Iowa who totaled six shots with only one being on frame.

The Golden Bears will have another home stand next weekend. They will face the University of Minnesota Duluth on Friday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. and St. Cloud State on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. at Sea Foam Stadium.
