Golden Bears Rocket League team tops Clarke 3-1

Phung Khang paces Concordia to victory with seven goals

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul Rocket League team (2-3) notched their second straight victory following a 3-1 win over Clarke on Monday night. The Golden Bears grew their win total to two in the 2020 NACE Rocket League Championship Series, handling the Pride and outscoring them 13-8 throughout the series.

Phung Khang led the way for the Golden Bears, scoring seven goals on only twelve shots. David Voelker led the team with five assists, giving him ten on the season and Colin Warren provided great offensive pressure for Concordia, tallying three goals and attempting twelve shots.

The first game of the night started with strong defense from both teams. Phung Khang got the scoring started for the Bears, breaking the scoreless tie with 1:35 remaining. The Pride quickly answered, scoring a goal to tie the game 1-1 with 1:10. David Voelker regained the lead for Concordia, scoring his first goal of the night with 0:36 to go in the game. The Bears played stout defense to hold on and win the first game 2-1.

Game two started with a much faster pace than the first as Clarke established a 1-0 lead just eight seconds into the game. The Golden Bears answered strongly however, as Khang, Voelker, and Warren would each score one goal within a minute to build a 3-1 lead with 3:25 on the clock. After two scoreless minutes, the Pride answered back by scoring three quick goals and regaining the lead 4-3 with just 0:52 left to play. Phung Khang went on a run of her own, scoring three goals in the final 43 seconds to lead CSP to victory, 6-4.

Trailing 2-0 in the series, Clarke built a two score lead with 3:29 in game three. Colin Warren got Concordia on the scoreboard as he put in a goal with 1:45 remaining. Still trailing, Khang once again scored late as she tied the game at 2-2 with only 0:19 seconds remaining. Overtime started 2-2, and the teams played intense defense before the Pride secured their first game victory of the night by scoring a goal after 3:11 of scoreless play.

The Golden Bears played aggressively trying to close the series in game four. Goals by Voelker and Khang within five seconds of each other gave CSP an early 2-0 lead with 3:12 to play. Clarke answered to score a goal with 0:56 and brought the margin to just one. Colin Warren ended the Pride's dream of a comeback as he scored the final goal of the night, establishing the 3-1 final score in favor of the Golden Bears.

The Concordia Rocket League team will look to extend their winning streak on Thursday night as they take on Northwest Christian at 7 p.m. in NACE Rocket League Championship Series play.
