Lewis leads Golden Bears past Warriors

The senior right side finished with 22 kills and four blocks in just three sets

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The second-ranked Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (8-2, 2-0 NSIC) rode a big day from senior Brooklyn Lewis to a sweep of Winona State (3-7, 0-2 NSIC) in their NSIC home opener at Gangelhoff Center on Saturday night.

Lewis finished with 22 of the team's 48 kills while committing just two errors as the Kasson native registered an impressive 7.33 kills per set in the match with a .526 hitting percentage while also chipping in four blocks. She has now reached double figures in nine of 10 matches with three matches of 20 or more kills.

As a team, Concordia hit .283 while holding the Warriors to .179 in the match in addition to a 48-40 edge in kills. CSP also picked up four aces compared to one for WSU.

Hope Schiller nearly double-doubled as she matched a match high with 18 digs to go along with nine kills in the win. Schiller moved to within three kills of reaching 1,000 in her career as she finished the night with 997 digs in her four years at CSP. Tori Hanson equaled that total with 18 digs to go along with four assists.

Elizabeth Mohr tallied 41 assists with six digs, two aces and two blocks for a full line while Erin Fallert added eight kills, seven digs and two blocks. Sara Macek added seven kills and a .429 hitting percentage with three blocks.

Cori Meyers paced Winona State with 10 kills while Becca Pagel led the way with 12 digs in the loss.

With the score even at 4-4 early in the first set, CSP grabbed four of the next five points to take the lead for good. The Warriors shrunk the margin to one at 10-9, but the Golden Bears responded with five straight and seven of eight to grow their lead to seven at 17-10. Concordia held Winona State at bay for the rest of the set as the lead remained four or more until the Golden Bears finished it off at 25-19.

Concordia jumped out front with a 3-0 run to start the second set before growing their lead to four at 7-3, but the Warriors bounced back with an 8-1 run to pull ahead 11-8. WSU maintained a small cushion throughout the middle portion of the set as they held a four point lead as late as 20-16 before the Golden Bears came storming back. Winona State managed just two more points the rest of the way as CSP closed out on a 9-2 run to win the set 25-22 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Golden Bears picked up where they left off with a 4-1 run to open the third set as they set the tone from the beginning. WSU managed to even it up four times by the 8-8 mark but were unable to capitalize and take the lead. Concordia started to pull away from there as they used an extended 10-3 run to take an 18-11 lead and burn both of Winona State's timeouts. The Warriors clawed their way back even at 21-21 following a 9-2 run, but CSP once again slammed the door as they scored the final four points to win the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.

The Golden Bears have a quick turnaround with a Tuesday trip to Minnesota State before two more road contests at #19 Wayne State on Friday and Augustana on Saturday.
