ST. PAUL, Minn. - This Saturday, Concordia-St. Paul (1-7 NSIC, 0-4 South) heads to Wayne State (4-4 NSIC, 2-2 South) for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Bob Cunningham Field at Memorial Stadium.
The road trip opens a two-game road swing for the Bears, their only back-to-back road games of the 2017 season. Next week, CSP plays its final road game of 2017 at Augustana in Sioux Falls. All three of Concordia's final games will feature a consistent 1 p.m. kickoff, ending on senior day at Sea Foam Stadium against Southwest Minnesota State on November 11.
While winter weather conditions will hit Minnesota late Thursday and most of Friday resulting in measurable snow, Wayne America does not face the same precipitation for it's artificial turf field and Saturday's high temperature is 51 degrees, fall sunshine and lighter wind (5-10 mph) than the typical fall day in northeastern Nebraska.
THE MATCHUP
Over the last two weeks, Concordia's ball control has taken a noticeable improvement, committing just one total turnover against two of the toughest defenses in the country, #10 Winona State and #13 Sioux Falls. In those two games, Concordia leads the give-take 2-1, as well. This week, the offense will have its hands full in hostile territory as WSC leads the country with 16 interceptions (tied with Bemidji State), led by the nation's third leading pickoff artist, Glenn Harris with six interceptions and three more pass breakups in eight games. Concordia's top receivers,
Elias Arlington (30-467, 15.6 avg) and
Marcus Gustaveson (27-378, 14.0 avg, 7 TD) compliment each other well as Gustaveson provides the height and vertical game while Arlington displays a shifty ability to make plays in open space. Further, Concordia's running game has produced well over its last two road trips with sophomore
Darnell Rolle combining for 258 yards on 43 carries (6.0 avg) while adding 4-46 through the air in close losses at MSU Moorhead and Upper Iowa. He'll look to exploit a WSC run defense that allows 163.6 yards per game to limit the the Wildcat ball-hawking secondary's ability to make game changing plays.
In last year's matchup, CSP and WSC combined for nine turnovers with Concordia committing six of them. CSP also turned its three turnovers created into just three points in its 45-10 week five homecoming loss to Wayne State.
The two teams meet for the 19th year in a row, looking to break a 9-9 series tie. CSP has won two of its last three trips to Wayne America where the Bears are 4-4 all-time. Head coach
Shannon Currier holds a 4-1 career record against the Wildcats and won his only visit to Wayne State, 14-11 in the 2001 season - CSP's third at the Division II level.
