Golden Bears keep #20 Wayne State off balance in sweep

Third-ranked Concordia's serve set the tone for the evening

ST. PAUL, Minn. - #3 Concordia-St. Paul (18-2, 11-1 NSIC) used 13 service aces to keep #20 Wayne State (14-8, 7-5 NSIC) out of system throughout the 61 minute straight set victory on Friday night at Gangelhoff Center, defeating the Wildcats 25-11, 25-15, 25-7.

Concordia continues the most challenging part of its conference tomorrow at home against #16 Augustana at 4 p.m. It's the second of a six match grind that features four nationally ranked teams along with two road matches at teams with 12-4 and 11-8 records, as well.

Junior setter Elizabeth Mohr led the team with six service aces on the night and set the attack to a .418 team hitting percentage (46-8-91) as the Bears hit at least .400 in each set. She also added seven digs on the defensive side as the Wildcats managed to hit just .070 (17-11-86) when they were able to return CSP's serve.

In addition to the aces, Concordia's serve played a noticeable role in the outcome as the Wildcats struggled with the return with numerous over passes in each set, leading to decisive kills on the CSP offensive end.

In the first set, Mohr had two of CSP's four service aces as the Golden Bears rallied for 17 kills at a .406 clip while Wayne State had just six first set kills. Further, Concordia had a 63 percent (7-11) sideout percentage, its lowest of the night but Wayne State came in at just 28 percent (7-25).

Mohr spread the ball around to her hot hitters early as senior middle Shelby Seurer registerd kills on all five of her swings while senior Mariya Sampson (4-0-6) and junior Brooklyn Lewis (4-0-7) had hot hands on the outside. The trio combined to hit 72.2 percent (13-18) in the first set.

Sampson finished the night with 14 kills, playing error-free while hitting .538 in a team-high 26 attacks. Lewis had 11 kills, also playing error-free and hitting .579 in her 19 swings.

Set two was tight from the start with five ties and two lead changes with the visiting Wildcats holding three two-point leads, 4-2, 5-3 and 6-4. After CSP scored the opening point of the set, WSC scored the next two and led or tied through the early going.

Trailing 7-6, Concordia made its move when sophomore Sydney Book teamed up with Sampson on a block to tie the set for the fourth time. Lewis followed with a kill and Concordia didn't trail the rest of the set. Book's three blocks led the Bears at the net.

Concordia broke away from a 15-13 lead by finishing the second set on a 10-2 run using four aces down the stretch: one from Mohr, two from freshman Erin Fallert and the final point ace by freshman Tori Hanson.

Hanson had three aces with Fallert providing two on the evening. Hanson also had 12 digs and four assists.

Concordia had 17 kills in the second set with Mohr assisting on all 17 as the team hit a match-high .424 in the set (17-3-33). CSP also had a scorching 87 percent sideout rate (14-16).

Wayne State had its most efficient set as well, hitting .212 (10-3-33) and its most efficient serve with a 54 percent sideout (13-24).

The third set was the most decisive as Concordia only allowed a single Wildcat kill and held WSC to a -.154 (1-5-26) attack. Meanwhile, CSP had an 85 percent sideout (6-7) while playing efficient volleyball. Mohr added three of her six aces in the deciding set and only needed nine assists on CSP's 12 kills.

Sampson was automatic, delivering seven kills and hitting .538 in the finale (7-0-13) while junior Taylor Soine had five of her nine digs in the final set.

The started fairly close as WSC grabbed the first lead on a service error by Mohr as she continued her aggressive serve. The Wildcats gave it right back with a service error and followed with a ball handling error to give Concordia the lead permanently.

With a 7-5 lead, Concordia only used three more serves the rest of the match as junior Hope Schiller (match-high 15 digs) served to a 4-0 run, Seurer served to a 6-0 run and Mohr served the final eight points to close the match on an 18-2 run.

It was back-to-back aces by Mohr that fittingly ended the match.
