MARSHALL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul soccer team (1-3-2, 1-0-2 NSIC) notched their first win of the season at Southwest Minnesota State (3-4, 2-2 NSIC) Friday evening, by a score of 2-1 in the NSIC matchup.
The Golden Bears trailed 1-0 at intermission, but played a stellar second half outshooting the Mustangs 13 to 9 and notched two second half goals to claim the NSIC win and three points.
Erica Landry and
Kelli Heytens showed tremendous leadership on the field during the physical game and
Kate Mallory showed great leadership on the bench, bringing energy and keeping the players on the bench in the game.
"We came out really strong in the second half. In a very chippy game, I felt we kept our composure and played Concordia soccer that helped us come away with the win." Head coach
Steve Bellis said following the game.
At the 63rd minute of the game, senior forward
Chelsie Lindsay received a pass in the middle of the box with multiple defenders on her, she faked right and while spinning left, she fired off a shot that rolled under the diving arm of Jessica Craigmile to tie the game at one.
About seven minutes later,
Jade Weller lined up a free kick and with a powerful kick, she put the ball into the net for her second goal of the season, giving CSP a 2-1 lead they would never relinquish.
The Concordia defense played quite well throughout the game and
Jordyn Clark made the start in goal and recorded two saves, but was required to leave the game early due to an injury, which brought in sophomore goalkeeper
Emily Nelson. Nelson also made two saves on the evening and earned her first win of the season in net.
"Having to come in midway through the second half, in a very close game, Nelson was on pitch between the pipes for the remainder of the game." Bellis had to say about Nelson.
The Mustangs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 13th minute of the game on their first shot attempt of the game by Alexandra Miskowiec.
The Golden Bears avenged a 1-0 loss to SMSU last season at Sea Foam Stadium, moving their all-time record to 8-11-1 against the Mustangs.
CSP returns home on Sunday as they play host to Sioux Falls at 1 pm in the NSIC matchup.
