Golden Bears fall to Sioux Falls in Sunday's NSIC matchup

CSP drops first conference match of the season

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia St. Paul soccer team (1-4-2, 1-1-2 NSIC) fell to Sioux Falls (2-5-1, 2-3 NSIC) by a score of 1-0 in Sunday's NSIC matchup at Sea Foam Stadium.

The Golden Bears controlled the game and had plenty of opportunities to tie or take the lead in Sunday's game outshooting the Cougars 26-4 (9-1 on goal) but could not find the back of the net.

"We did dominate the game and controlled the ball but we got soaked into taking too many long shots. Our quality did not show today and it's unfortunate, but we will get back at it and prepare for our road game on Saturday." Head coach Steve Bellis had to say following the game.

The first 45 minutes of play was primarily controlled by the Golden Bears as they out shout the Cougars 12-2 in the first half. However, Sioux Falls would jump out to a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute of the first half off a goal by Lauren LaFavre.

LaFavre's powerful shot was deflected off a CSP defender head, which caused the ball to sail out of the reach of Emily Nelson and into the net.

Coming out in the second half CSP continued to control the game and kept the ball in the offensive zone but could still not score the equalizer. The Golden Bears outshot Sioux Falls 14-2 in the second half of play.

Concordia did have their best chance to tie the game, late in the second half but were flagged for offsides.

Senior forward Chelsie Lindsay led Concordia with eight shots on the afternoon, four of which were on goal. Jade Weller added three shots, while Colette Piche, Shannon Wynne, and Jordan Rowan-Stafford each attempted two shots in the game.

Sioux Falls' goalkeeper, Morgan Perkins, came away with nine saves for the Cougars.

The Golden Bears return to action on Saturday, October 1st, when they travel to Minnesota Crookston for a noon start time.
