Golden Bears stay unbeaten on the road with sweep of U-Mary

CSP improves to 12-0 away from St. Paul on the season

BISMARCK, N.D. – The Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (20-2, 12-2 NSIC) made it four consecutive sweeps as they won all three sets at University of Mary (9-14, 4-10 NSIC) on Saturday night.
 
The Golden Bears made it 16 wins in as many meetings with the Marauders as the sweep was their 13th in a row and 15th in 16 meetings in the all-time series. Concordia also extended their winning streak on the road as they improved to 12-0 away from St. Paul on the season.
 
On the night, CSP held a nearly .300 point advantage in hitting percentage as they finished the match at .380 while holding the Marauders to .084. The Golden Bears also held advantages of 6-1 in service aces, 9.0-4.0 in total blocks and 39-27 in digs.
 
On a night in which the team finished with just 49 kills, five different players registered at least five kills. Anna Schlaak continued to lead the way as she finished with a team-high nine kills to go along with 10 digs as she fell a kill short of picking up another double-double.
 
Mariya Sampson was right behind Schlaak as she picked up seven kills while Riley Hanson and Emma Lange each added six kills. Hanson hit an impressive .625 to go along with eight total blocks as well.
 
Emily McDonough once again finished in double figures in digs as she led all players with 11 while Kasey Williams contributed 29 assists and six digs as well.
 
Lauren Randall and Thayna Silva matched each other with eight kills apiece for U-Mary as Randall added five digs and Silva put up four. Janell Finkbeiner 24 assists and collected Geovana Almeida added eight digs in the loss.
 
Concordia jumped ahead early as they scored five of the first seven points in the opening set. The lead reached six at 14-8 and remained at four at 18-14 before the Marauders came storming back with a 5-0 run to take a 19-18 lead. The two teams traded points from there as Mary held a one point advantage at 23-22 until the next three points went in favor of CSP to take the set 25-23.
 
The Golden Bears carried the momentum into the second set as they opened up with a 6-1 run to take control. They continued to push it from there as six straight points in the middle of the set extended CSP's lead to 18-6. After Mary ended the run with a point, Concordia returned to the offensive with seven of eight to win the set 25-8 as they built a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
Concordia once again began strong in the third set as they took five of six to take an early four point lead. U-Mary wouldn't pull closer than three the rest of the way as CSP maintained a comfortable advantage throughout the set. The Golden Bears saw their advantage reach double digits at 18-8 before cruising to a 25-13 victory to finish off U-Mary in straight sets.
 
Concordia returns home next weekend as MSU Moorhead and Northern State come to town. CSP takes on MSUM on Friday and NSU on Saturday.
