ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Concordia University (19-17, 10-12 NSIC) surrendered a pair of 3-run home runs to #20th-ranked St. Cloud State this afternoon in a 7-2 game one loss at Dick Putz Field. In a 10-3 game two loss, the Huskies added a 3-run homer and a 3-run double to pick up the sweep. Concordia senior
Bryan Lippincott (Des Moines, Iowa) hit his ninth homer of the year in the first inning of game one, and added an RBI double, his 17th, in game two. BOX SCORES: Game 1 | Game 2
The Golden Bears continue the toughest stretch of their schedule this Wednesday when they host Augustana. The Vikings are in second in the league at 16-6 while producing a 24-13 overall record. They are expected to feature Derek Hanson on the mound. Hanson leads the nation in strikeouts per 9-innings and tops the NSIC in total strikeouts.
Game 1: SCSU 7, Concordia 2
Lippincott's homer came in the first inning with two outs, a 2-2 pitch over the right field fence to give the visiting Golden Bears the first lead.
But the Huskies responded with a two-out, 3-run homer by Sean Borman in the bottom of the inning. Borman is the younger brother of CU great Matt Borman (2003-04, 07).
Concordia starter
Griff Kilber (Chanhassen, Minn.) settled in after the homer, retiring the next eight hitters and pitching around a one-out walk to Borman in the fourth inning. Into the fifth, Kilber had retired 11 out of 12 batters.
In the top of the fifth, Concordia trimmed the lead as senior
Logan Bouts (Hopkins, Minn.) made the Huskies pay for intentionally walking Lippincott. With one out and a runner on first (
Drew Turk), SCSU decided to put the tying run (Lippincott) aboard for Bouts, the go-ahead run. Bouts delivered a two-out RBI single through the left side, scoring Turk but Lippincott was gunned out at the plate trying to tie the game.
In the bottom of the fifth, Kilber allowed four-straight hits with one out, including an RBI double and a 3-run homer to Joey Benke and suddenly the Huskies were up 7-2.
Kilber retired the final five batters of the game but the Golden Bears were unable to rally, with no one getting into scoring position in the later innings.
Kilber falls to 1-2 with the loss despite working three of his six innings in 1-2-3 fashion. He allowed just six hits and two walks, but half of the hits were for extra bases and produced all seven runs charged to him.
Kyle Fischer picked up the win, improving to 6-1 with the complete game, striking out six. SCSU starters have pitched 7, 9 and 7-innings in succession in the series thus far.
Game 2: SCSU 10, Concordia 3
The game started off relatively calm, as junior right hander
Andy Fagely (Mahtomedi, Minn.) retired the first four Huskies in order before allowing a solo homer to Borman in the second inning. He stranded a two-out double in the inning, but gave up another run in the third.
The Golden Bears picked up a run of their own in the top of the third when Lippincott laced an RBI double to right to temporarily tie the game.
Both teams squandered scoring opportunities in the fourth inning while SCSU did their damage in the fifth when Brian Hansen hit a 3-run homer to left center for a 5-1 SCSU lead.
That was enough of a lead for starter Shawn Riesgraf, who went 5.0 innings and left with the lead. The Huskies padded the lead in the sixth inning, scoring two more runs off the Concordia bullpen but freshman right hander
Nate Reagles (Apple Valley, Minn.) stopped the damage by inducing a bases loaded double play grounder to end the inning with only two runs in.
Reagles then worked a perfect seventh inning allowing the Golden Bears to score a pair of runs in the top of the eighth to cut the margin to 7-3.
In the bottom of the eighth, SCSU finally got to Reagles as Joey Benke delivered a bases clearing 3-run double to the opposite field in the left center gap, blowing the game back open at 10-3.
The 3-4 spots in SCSU's lineup accounted for nine of their 10 RBI in the game despite just three hits between them.
Freshman
Kyle Dalton (Minnetonka, Minn.) went 2-for-2 with a walk and a run in his three plate appearances. The rookie second baseman is maintaining a .387 average on the year.
Adding the other multi-hit game was the leadoff hitter, junior
Greg Larpenter (Urbandale, Iowa), who went 2-for-4 and is now hitting .333.
Riesgraf earned the win and improved to 6-1 with a 1.84 ERA. Fagely was charged with loss, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing five earned runs.
