Concordia swept by Augustana

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia baseball team (19-19, 10-14 NSIC) has hit a rough patch, dropping six straight games and seven out of eight with a pair of losses today to Augustana (26-13, 18-6) at Barnes Field in the home finale for Concordia. Augustana's ace, Derek Hansen, out-dueled Concordia in a 3-2 game one, while the Golden Bears fell 8-2 in the second game. BOX SCORES: Game 1 | Game 2

Game 1: Augie 3, CU 2
Augustana's Hansen set the school's single-season strikeout record, adding 10 to his season ledger for a season total of 88.

But the Golden Bears didn't make getting the win easy on him. Concordia forced him to throw 120 pitches in 6.1 innings, drawing five walks and adding five hits.

The Golden Bears left 10 runners on base in the game including six in scoring position. Both of their runs came with two outs, however.

Junior right hander Zach Goodwin (Mahtomedi, Minn.) started for Concordia, and shut the Vikings out for the first three innings, retiring the first five batters of the game.

He pitched out of a second and third, two out jam in the second and stranded a runner on third in the third inning.

In the fourth, Augustana struck first with a two-run homer to left by Nate Hewes.

Concordia countered in the bottom of the inning. With two outs and no one on, the 7-8 spots in Concordia's lineup put together back-to-back walks with freshman Kyle Dalton (Minnetonka, Minn.) delivering an RBI single to center to cut the deficit in half.

In the fourth, Goodwin allowed a leadoff single through the left side and after a pair of wild pitches and a 2-1 count, was not able to finish after throwing a handful of warm-up pitches. The reason for his departure was not made available.

He was relieved by freshman right hander Nicho Roessler (St. Anthony, Minn.) who allowed a sacrifice fly on the first pitch of his appearance but went on to retire the last seven batters of the game.

Trailing 3-1 in the sixth inning, Dalton hit a two out infield single fielded by Hanson. He was followed by leadoff hitter Greg Larpenter (Urbandale, Iowa) who hit a soaring RBI double to dead centerfield.

The two players each had a pair of hits, Dalton going 2-for-3 with a run and RBI, Larpenter going 2-for-4 with his 16th double of the season. Together they accounted for four of Concordia's five hits.

Goodwin took the loss, falling to 2-2. He worked 4.0-plus innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits in a solid outing. Roessler pitched 3.0 scoreless, 1-hit innings of relief striking out three.

Hansen's win improved him to 6-3 with a 1.29 earned run average. David Borchardt earned his first save of the season by striking out the only two batters he faced.

Game 2: Augie 8, CU 2
The Golden Bears started game two by loading the bases in the first inning with one out but couldn't scratch a run across. They'd proceed to strand 12 total runners in game two for a total of 22 left on in 16 innings of play on the afternoon.

Augustana started the scoring as Hansen delivered at the plate with the first of two home runs in the game. This one a solo to center. Augustana added a pair of runs in the third off senior right hander Ben Lemke (Rosemount, Minn.).

After the three runs allowed, Lemke settled in by working three straight scoreless innings while maintaining a manageable pitch count for the 9-inning contest.

But he ran into trouble in the seventh and was chased from the contest after allowing four runs with another runner on.

Hansen added his second homer of the game immediately, closing Lemke's line. The senior went 6.2 innings, allowing three earned runs (seven total runs) on eight hits while striking out three. He would take the loss and fall to 2-5 on the year.

Augustana countered with their No. 2 starter behind Hansen. Casey Jacobson went 6.0 in the second game, shutting out the Golden Bears along the way while scattering five hits and a pair of walks. He'd get the win and move to 4-3.

With both teams in the bullpen in the late innings, Concordia's offense began to show signs of life. Senior Logan Bouts (Hopkins, Minn.) delivered a 2-run single with two outs in the seventh to put the Golden Bears on the scoreboard.

But they left runners on first and third in the seventh and second and third in the eighth innings.

Freshman right hander Adam Fredericks (Minnetonka, Minn.) finished the game for CU, working 2.0 scoreless innings with a strikeout.

Dalton added another 2-hit game, going 2-for-3 to lift his season average back up to the .400 mark. Senior Bryan Lippincott (Des Moines, Iowa) also had a pair of hits, going 2-for-4.

Concordia's only extra base hit came from the bench as junior Mick Sawinski delivered a double in his only at bat of the game. In six at bats this year, Sawinski has produced three doubles and is slugging 1.000.

The Golden Bears look to snap out of their April funk this weekend with a 4-game road series at Northern State. Concordia has a 5-3 record in away games, compared to closing out the year 6-12 at home.
