Golden Bears complete series sweep at U-Mary

BISMARCK, N.D. - The nation's second ranked control artist took the mound for game three and didn't disappoint. Sophomore right hander Adam Kramer (Wausau, Wis.) went the distance, striking out nine to just one walk. Seniors Doug Stearns (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Kris Long (Rochester, Minn.) hit back-to-back doubles in the seventh for the game winning run in a 4-3 victory over U-Mary. In game two, senior right hander Chris Peterson (St. Anthony, Minn.) threw 7-shutout innings as the offense kicked into gear in an 11-0 win. BOX SCORES: Game 1 | Game 2

The Golden Bears have now won 13 games in a row against the University of Mary and are on a 5-game winning streak in the 2012. season. Concordia is 13-7 overall on the season, 5-3 in NSIC play while U-Mary falls to 2-20 overall and 1-7 in conference play.

Concordia continues Northern Sun play by closing out their 6-game road trip with a Tuesday doubleheader at #20th-ranked Minnesota State.

Game 1: CU 4, U-Mary 3
The Golden Bears picked up their 12th straight win over the Marauders while pushing their active win streak to four games. The win for Kramer improves him to 2-2 on the year as he allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits.

On the season, Kramer has struck out 32 batters in 30.0 innings with just two walks allowed, limiting opponents to a .235 average.

The game was scoreless through four innings as the Golden Bears couldn't even muster a hit off Jeff Skadeland, only getting one runner aboard via a hit by pitch (Elliot Powell).

Kramer went toe-to-toe with Skadeland, however, matching the zeroes through four innings. Kramer struck out six batters through the first four innings.

In the top of the fifth, Concordia used a two-out error to start a rally. Long reached on an error by Skadeland and stole second. He was followed by three straight hits by Jared Kramer, Paul Giel and Kyle Dalton to not only break up the no-hitter, but the shutout as well. J.Kramer's single to right center scored Long and Giel doubled for runners on second third with Dalton delivering a two-run single the opposite way to right.

Armed with a three run lead, A.Kramer finally proved hittable. Two singles to the bottom of the order set U-Mary up with a pair of runners and one out for the top of the order. Second hitter Cory Herback hit a two-run double to center field but was thrown out at third, Giel to Dalton to Bryan Lippincott to retire the potential tying run at third base.

Skadeland retired Concordia in order in the sixth and pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth. A.Kramer struck out two straight with runners on second and third and one out to erase the U-Mary threat with the go-ahead run 90-feet from home.

In the top of the seventh, Stearns pinch hit for Powell to lead off, delivering a double to left center. Long followed with an RBI double to left, forcing Skadeland from the game with no one out and Concordia leading 4-3.

Reliever Travis Famias retired the next three batters, however, as Concordia left Long on third base.

A.Kramer retired the side in order in the seventh to preserve the victory.

Concordia's 2-thru-5 spots in the order didn't produce, going 0-for-12 with two strikeouts but the Golden Bears rallied and came up with timely hits late in the contest from the bottom of the order and at the top with Dalton.

Skadeland took a tough loss for the Marauders falling to 0-5. He worked 6.0-plus, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits. He struck out three and didn't issue any walks.

Game 2: CU 11, U-Mary 0
The 2-thru-5 spots in the lineup came alive in game two, combining to hit 7-for-16 with the 3-4 hitters, Lippincott and Logan Bouts, each collecting three RBI.

But the starting pitching continued to be the story of this series as Peterson threw a 4-hit shutout, striking out four while walking two. He improves to 2-0 on the year while lowering his earned run average to 3.81.

The Golden Bears took the lead in the second inning with a two out rally, with Paul Giel delivering an RBI single through the left side. Giel has now hit safely in five straight, responding well to moving to the 9-spot in the lineup. But Concordia left the bases loaded in the inning.

In the third, Concordia got the big two-out hit. With one run in and the bases loaded with two outs, J.Kramer delivered a two-run double and nearly knocked in a third but Troy DuBay was thrown out at home to end the inning.

Leading 4-0, Concordia kept putting the pressure on in the fourth. Lippincott and Bouts delivered back-to-back run scoring doubles with Lippincott's scoring a pair of runs in the midst of a 5-run inning to take a 9-0 lead.

Lippincott and Bouts delivered back-to-back RBI at bats again in the fifth inning, Lippincott adding another double (his 12th) and Bouts driving in a sacrifice fly.

Lippincott went 2-for-5 for his first multi-hit game of the series, driving in three runs. Bouts was 2-for-3 with three RBI and scored a pair as well.

With the 11-run lead, Peterson kept putting up zeroes on the Marauder half of the scoreboard, allowing the game to end with the 10-run rule after 7-innings of play were completed.

Peterson showed the ability to work through an inning quickly, with three 1-2-3 innings (1st, 3rd, 5th) and pitched out of trouble in the rest. He forced U-Mary to leave five runners in scoring position, and twice stranded runners on third base.

The top of the lineup, Dalton, remained steady by going 3-for-5 with two runs while Giel at the bottom went 2-for-4.
