Game 1: Minnesota State 9, CU 8 (10)
Concordia's five game winning streak came to a close as the host Mavericks remained unbeaten in Northern Sun play with the game one result. Concordia led 5-0 in the early going, and 8-3 in the middle innings before MSU rallied for six unanswered runs.
The scheduled 7-inning first game of the doubleheader went three extra frames, with MSU leading hitter Nolan Johnson delivering the game-winning RBI single. He finished 4-for-6 with a homer and a pair of RBI. Jeremy Sudbeck hit the game-tying 3-run homer for MSU in the bottom of the 7th off of senior right hander
Ben Lemke (Rosemount, Minn.) to tie the score at 8-8.
Lemke was on in relief to close the game out for starter
Zach Goodwin (Mahtomedi, Minn.) who worked 4.0 innings, allowing three earned runs and was in line for the win.
The Golden Bears jumped out to an early 5-0 lead over MSU and would knock starter Harvey Martin from the game after 4.0 innings, roughing his 1.85 ERA up for six earned runs (seven total) on nine hits in the process.
Concordia led 7-3 after four innings when Goodwin departed.
While Lippincott had a big day at the plate, so did junior
Greg Larpenter (Urbandale, Iowa) hitting in front of him. Larpenter went 3-for-4 with three runs, and an RBI. Senior
Doug Stearns (Minnetonka, Minn.) was also 2-for-5 with an RBI at the plate while sliding to first base defensively.
Game 2: CU 6, Minnesota State 0
Kilber was completely in control from start to finish, throwing three no-hit innings to start the game and allowing just a runner on first twice in the first five frames. He was perfect in the second, third, fifth and seventh innings.
The only time Kilber pitched into trouble was the sixth, a two-out MSU rally after an error kept the inning alive. MSU was able to load the bases with a single and a walk before Kilber struck out Corey Glieden looking with Concordia leading 5-0 and the tying run on deck.
Kilber only used 83 pitches to complete the shutout, striking out six in the process while walking just one with the two scattered singles. He improves to 1-0 on the year while making his first start and sixth overall appearance.
Concordia, despite dropping the tough first game contest, rallied early. With two outs and no one on in the first, the Mavericks continued to pitch around Lippincott as he drew a two-out walk. Senior
Logan Bouts (Minnetonka, Minn.), who pitched 2.2 innings of relief in the first game, followed with an RBI double and scored on Stearns' RBI single to left for the 2-0 lead in the first.
Concordia added another pair in the third, with senior
Kris Long (Rochester, Minn.) delivering a two-out bases loaded single that scored a pair.
In the fifth, Lippincott led off the inning and was hit by pitch and came around to score with a two out RBI single by senior
Troy DuBay (Urbandale, Iowa) for the five run lead into the late innings. DuBay would also draw a bases loaded walk in the seventh to pick up his second and RBI and another insurance run for Concordia.
Aside from N.Johnson for MSU, no other Maverick registered a hit off Kilber on the afternoon. Johnson continues to battle Lippincott for the league and national lead in hitting. Lippincott, with his 5-for-5 day, is now up to .513 while Johnson, going 6-for-8 raised his average to .508 and should have enough plate appearances to qualify for the national lead.
Concordia got to both of MSU's top starters as Tyler Ockuly took the loss, falling to 2-2. He allowed five runs in 5.0 innings on five hits and a pair of walks.
The Golden Bears continue Northern Sun play this weekend as they open up a 12-game homestand and will play 14 of the next 16 at Barnes Field before finishing their last 10 games on the road.
