Golden Bears win with 10-run rule over William Penn

TUCSON, Ariz. - Concordia University's offense woke up in a big way on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after stranding 19 runners on base in a loss, the Golden Bears crossed home plate 16 times in a 16-6 victory in 8-innings over William Penn (Iowa) University. Concordia improves to 3-4 on the year while William Penn falls to 2-9. Junior Paul Giel III (Minnetonka, Minn.) went 5-for-5 and senior Bryan Lippincott (Des Moines, Iowa) went 3-4 with six RBI out of the 2-3 spots in the lineup. BOX SCORE

It didn't take any time at all for the Concordia offense to come to life. Leadoff hitter Greg Larpenter (Urbandale, Iowa) and Giel started things off with back-to-back walks and Lippincott singled to load the bases. Senior Logan Bouts (Hopkins, Minn.) delivered a two-run single followed by a single by senior Troy DuBay (Urbandale, Iowa) to reload the bases.

Sophomore Elliot Powell (Minnetonka, Minn.) slugged a bases clearing double to the opposite field down the left field line and Concordia had an early 5-1 lead just six batters into the game.

That early cushion helped freshman right hander Nicho Roessler (St. Anthony, Minn.) settle in on the mound. In his collegiate debut, Roessler allowed a single and back-to-back walks to his first three hitters but worked his way out of the jam with just one run allowed.

He scattered singles in the next two innings before giving up three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

But by that time, the offense had built a 9-6 lead over WPU.

Roessler's day ended after five innings with a three run lead, good enough to put him in line for a victory. He allowed six runs on nine hits with five strikeouts in his debut.

Senior left hander Cody Wilcoxson (Aurora, Colo.) shut the door over the final three frames, scattering a hit and a walk while striking out four for the save. He did his damage on the mound while hurling an efficient 38 pitches, 26 for strikes.

After building the early lead, it was Lippincott who cleaned up at the plate the rest of the way. He knocked in a run in the second on a fielder's choice groundout and stole second, tripled in two more in the fourth, singled in two more in the fifth and delivered a sacrifice fly in his final at bat in the seventh.

Lippincott is now hitting .542 with a .958 slugging percentage on the season, delivering his second triple.

Giel also walked as part of his perfect 5-for-5 day at the plate, Concordia's second 5-for-5 offensive perfromance of the year as freshman Kyle Dalton (Minnetonka, Minn.) did the same on Sunday in game two against SMSU. Giel had a pair of runs and RBI.

Dalton is second on the team in hitting at .458 while Giel is third at .414 after today.

At the top of the lineup, Larpenter was in need of a breakout performance after starting the year 3-for-25 in the first six games (.120). He matched his season hit total today, going 3-for-4 while also walking twice, scoring three runs and driving in a pair.

Bouts and Powell each drove in three runs and had two hits apiece as well.

Out of the ninth spot, Dalton scored four runs, going 2-for-4.

Stanley Muller was charged with the loss for William Penn, allowing 11 earned runs over six innings. Michael Crandell led their offense with a 3-for-3 performance.

Concordia returns to the field tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. central time against Southern Vermont. Meanwhile, William Penn is currently facing Southwest Minnesota State at the time of this story.
