Golden Bears salvage series with game-4 win

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia baseball team (9-7, 1-3 NSIC) picked up their first conference win of the season this afternoon in a doubleheader split with Bemidji State (10-7, 3-0 NSIC), losing 7-3 in the first game before a solid 10-4 series finale win. Bemidji State takes three of four from Concordia to open conference play in the 4-game series held at Barnes Field. Senior Logan Bouts (Hopkins, Minn.) went 4-for-9 with a double, home run and five RBI in the two games. BOX SCORES: Game 1 | Game 2 | | Series Photos

Game 1: Bemidji St 7, CU 3
Bemidji State continued to roll with their momentum early in the game as leadoff hitter Trevor Purvis hit a solo home run in a three run first inning with the second two runs being unearned.

They'd open up their lead to 5-1 after the first three innings before sophomore right hander Adam Kramer (Wausau, Wis.) settled into a groove.

Kramer retired 12 straight from the end of the third to the middle of the seventh innings. But he allowed two runs in each of those two innings which were the difference in the 7-3 ball game.

He worked 6.2 innings before being pulled in the seventh, striking out eight without walking anyone. He now has a 23-1 strikeout-walk ratio on the season in 23.0 innings pitched.

Concordia's bats couldn't open things up against BSU starter Logan Kalis, who went the distance for his second win of the year. He allowed only four hits to the potent Concordia lineup, struck out six and walked one.

Bouts went 2-for-2 to lead the Concordia attack.

Bemidji State's first seven hitters in the lineup had hits, while cleanup hitter Jaryd Marks went 2-for-4 and Matt Ellinghuysen went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.  Marks would get three hits in the second game to extend his hitting streak to 13 games while Bryan Lippincott's streak came to a close at the same number as he went 0-for-3.

Game 2: CU 10, Bemidji St 4
Bemidji State struck first again in game two with a two-out rally in the opening inning to take a 1-0 lead.

From there, senior right hander Chris Peterson (St. Anthony, Minn.) went into cruise control as he retired the next eight batters, and pitched around a one-out walk in the fourth inning by inducing a comebacker double play. He'd surrender a solo homer to Marks in the sixth inning but struck out the next two swinging to end his day.

Peterson went 6.0 strong innings, allowing just three hits and two earned runs. He struck out four and walked a pair for his first win.

Trailing 1-0 in the third, Concordia's bats came alive off the bat of Bouts, who punched a three-run homer over Wies' Wall in left field after freshman Kyle Dalton (Minnetonka, Minn.) led off with a double and junior Greg Larpenter (Urbandale, Iowa) reached on an infield single.

Dalton went 3-for-5 in the game, scoring twice and driving in a run out of the leadoff spot where he hit for the first time in his career at Concordia. Larpenter, moved to the second spot, responded by going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and an RBI.

In the fourth inning, it was the third hitter in the order, Lippincott, who smoked a two-run double to left center in the midst of a five run inning to take an 8-1 lead. Lippincott went 2-for-5 in the second game, with the double being his ninth of the year while the RBI total reached 21.

Concordia added runs in the fifth and sixth innings as well to pad their lead to 10-1 before Peterson departed.

In relief, freshman right hander Nicho Roessler (St. Anthony, Minn.) finished the game for a three inning save, the first of his career. He pitched two scoreless innings before allowing a pair of runs in the ninth.

Sophomore outfielder Drew Turk (Plainfield, Ill.) made his second start of the year for the Golden Bears, slotting in left field and eighth in the lineup. He produced in the start, too, by going 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs and two RBI and a double. Senior Troy DuBay (Urbandale, Iowa) and sophomore Elliot Powell (Minnetonka, Minn.) each had a pair of hits as well with all nine of Concordia's starters getting at least a hit in the game.

Concordia scored eight of their runs in the game off starter Ryan Van Someren, who entered play with a 1.80 earned run average on the year. They forced him off the mound in the fourth, finishing with 3.1 innings on his final line.

Concordia now hits the road for a six game stretch, with a four game weekend series on March 31 and April 1 at U-Mary in Bismarck, N.D. before a midweek doubleheader at #19 Minnesota State in Mankato, Minn.
