Golden Bears on wrong end of close games in home opener

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia University's 6-game winning streak was snapped this afternoon by Bemidji State as the Golden Bears fell 4-2 and 12-11 in their first NSIC games of the year on their home opening weekend at Barnes Field. Concordia falls to 8-6 overall and 0-2 in NSIC, while BSU improves to 9-7 and 2-0. BOX SCORES: Game 1 | Game 2

Concordia held leads in each game, bringing a 2-0 lead into the top of the fifth and leading 2-1 in the top of the sixth in the first game. They led 8-3 after three innings in game two as well.

Bemidji State used a three run sixth inning in the first game and a seven run fourth inning in the second game to take leads that they would not relinquish for the sweep.

In game one, Concordia scored a run in each of the first two innings but left the bases loaded in the first inning and stranded a runner on second in the second inning after hitting into an inning ending double play. They were also thrown out at third base moments before a run scored in the fourth inning.

BSU game one starter Phil Bray pitched out of trouble early and cruised late, retiring the final eight batters of the game, three by strikeout. He improved to 4-1 on the year in the process.

Concordia senior right handed pitcher Ben Lemke (Rosemount, Minn.) took the loss despite going the distance. He allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits with six strikeouts and only one walk in a solid outing.

Leadoff hitter, junior Greg Larpenter (Urbandale, Iowa), went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and senior Bryan Lippincott (Des Moines, Iowa) went 1-for-2 with an RBI in the loss.

In game two, Concordia struck first again with three runs in the second inning. BSU countered with a three-run homer in the third to tie it before the Golden Bears put up five in the bottom of the inning for an 8-3 lead.

The five-run inning for CU knocked BSU starter Miles Campbell out of the game in the third inning.

But in the top of the fourth, BSU added two more home runs including another three-run shot to knock CU starter Andy Fagely out of the game early.

The Beavers delivered three home runs in the game off Fagely. Prior to today, BSU entered with one home run in their previous 15 games.

BSU would extend the lead to 12-8 as Ryan Anderson kept Concordia's bats off the scoreboard through the middle innings and into the eighth.

In the bottom of the eighth, sophomore Elliot Powell (Minnetonka, Minn.) crushed a three-run shot to right center to cut the score to a one-run margin. Powell went 3-for-5 with his first career homer and four RBI in the game.

But Anderson closed the door after the homer to pick up the win.

Anderson went 6.1 innings out of the bullpen, only allowing the three run homer.

Concordia's bullpen was also solid, as junior right hander Zach Goodwin (Mahtomedi, Minn.) kept them in the game. He pitched 4.2 innings and allowed two runs (one earned). Senior southpaw Cody Wilcoxson (Aurora, Colo.) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning as well.

Larpenter and Lippincott added solid performances offensively as Larpenter went 2-for-5 with his sixth double of the year (third of the day) and a pair of RBI. Lippincott went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles (eight on the year) and a pair of runs and is hitting .588. He extended his hitting streak to 13 games in the process.

Senior catcher Doug Stearns (Minnetonka, Minn.) also had a 3-hit effort, going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, pair of runs and pair of RBI.

The teams complete their four game series tomorrow at noon at Barnes Field with a 7-inning and 9-inning doubleheader.
